I don't much care if it's hardware or software as long as it gets good sustained transfer rates and ping times (well good for 56k obviously it won't compare to cable), and it has to work in Linux.
It also has to be PCI. Fax capabilities would be nice to, but not 100% necessary.

One of my unlucky friends is moving to an area w/o broadband and I've been on the broadband wagon so long I don't remember what a good modem looks like ;)

Is a nice serial port external modem out of the question?

Yeah, Serial port modems are much more OS flexible, and that's what I use when I need a modem for a linux machine. He wants it internal though, and he doesn't have ISA slots so PCI or AMR (or AGP ;))...I told him to get a Serial Port external, but he doesn't want one

Supposably there are some hack-job drivers out there for lucent driven winmodems. I know that Actiontech is one brand in particular that uses the lucent chipsets.

PM or Email Modus and ask him what winmodems are compatible w/ linux. He of all people should know :D

I have a US Robotic Model 5610 PCI Internal Hardware fax modem that I got it up and running on Mandrake 7.0. But that was a while ago and I don't run Linux anymore so I kind of forgot the setting. I remeber you have to modify the serial device file and have it loaded while the OS is loading. There are Linux how-to's talking about that, I am sure you can find it somewhere. But it does require you do something with the OS, it's not PNP, so depends on how much your friend knows about Linux, this may or may not be a good option.

Last time I checked, there are how-to's talking about getting software modem to work, your friend may want to check those out and save a few buck. But if I were to do it again, I would get a external modem that was only a little more than my hardware modem, but is much easier to setup in any OS.

Modus won't have a clue. He derided linux in one of his bash hardware modem sessions.

The Lucent LT modems have a driver that's about 90% right now (version .90 right now). At the rate it's moving they should have a fully fuctional driver (ie that supports all the fuctionality of the modem chipset) for the LT modem that is open source within six months.
