I am looking for a page layout / desktop publishing application to use for designing some posters and data sheets for my little side business (I'm going to start selling custom parts for RC cars).
All of printers I have contacted want PDF files without embedded fonts, that is, they want all of the text converted to curves. They generally work with Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, and Adobe PageMaker and some will accept documents in that format, though PDF seems to be the preferred input. There also seems to be a heavy Mac slant in the printing industry (which is OK, my notebook is an Apple PowerBook G4).
The problem is, I can't afford Illustrator and InDesign. I could maybe afford one of those, but not both, and I want both illustration and page layout.
Can anyone recommend some good, cheap, software that does a pretty good job with page layout? It needs to be able to import and work with .eps clipart in native vector format and the application has to export the final document as a .ps, .eps, or .pdf format. Windows or Mac, it doesn't really matter, I work with both.
