Good or Bad idea..........

Is it a good idea to partition my hard drive so that I have about 3 gigs set aside for windows xp pro and the remainder of the hard drive would be used for any other files and programs? Is there an advantage to this setup (any performance increases/decreases)? Thanks

You're not going to get any change in performace from a partition. The main advantage to having a partition is having a seperate physcial space to store data. By placing your OS on a different partition you are free to format that and reinstall the OS with affecting anything on the other partition but this can also be done by simply having a seperate hard drive. This is about the only advantage of using partitions...

bullion416, I think partitioning a drive is almost always a bad idea. I don't see any advantage to having your operating system on one partition and your programs on another. You end up wasting space on one partition while another partition needs more space.

I do see a possible advantage to having your operating system and programs on one partition with your data on another partition. This lets you reformat and reinstall the operating system and programs while keeping your data intact. On the other hand, if you have a way to backup your data(which you should always have) this isn't as much of an advantage. All things considered, I'd say have one partition.

What WhoDeeny said.

It's nice to have a 2nd partition to store things in/move things to. You can reload your OS and just move things back over from the other partition.

If you have the space and don't mind the hassle you can make a small partition and put ONLY your pagefile in it. It helps a bit with pagefile fragmentation but not too much. (Enough physical memory and this doens't matter anyway).

I'd keep your drive whole or at most make a partition for documents and settings. I was running a 9 gig scsi + a 40 gig ata drive for the longest time. That scsi filled up fast and it was a hassle having to juggle apps between two drives. Some crap just really likes to be installed on C: unfortunately.

Having 2 HARDDRIVES is another story...

SInce IDE HDs are notorious for their dismal seek times, having an OS drive and seperate storage drive can greatly improve performance

I'd have to agree that there are benefits to multiple partitions, but I'd recommend more than 3GB for XP.... I would run no less than 6gb, I personally run 10GB boot partition, and 150GB data on my XP box.

I don't see any advantage to having your operating system on one partition and your programs on another.

I do, that way I don't have to reinstall my programs if I reinstall the OS. It doesn't work right with all programs, but the majority of the ones I use work just fine.
