Good or bad for the HD?

I had a spare coolermaster heatsink that was collecting dust so I decided to slap a bit of compound on the bottom and place it on the top of my HD. I thought it might help keep it cool. Would this hurt the HD or not?

I doubt it's really making a noticable difference. If you think your HDD is running a little on the hot side, amybe a nice 80mm fan blowing over it will help.

I certaintly wouldnt bother, even though it would make a negligable difference the vibrations by the fan itself could accelerate failure of the HD... I dont know if this would be the case but it popped up in my mind. I'd remove the fan off the heatsink and just have it blow towards the HD, that would remove more heat over the entire drive.

Cheers

<< Do I have to worrie about any dust getting inside of it? I don't know alot about HDD's. Are they sealed good? >>

Yes they are sealed very well. When I stated that you could have a fan blow over it, I didn't mean attach the fan to the HDD.

I ain't using a fan on the heatsink. Just a plain heatsink. I know a fan blowing a couple inches above it would do more for it but it would create more dust.

so do I have to worrie about the fan damageing the HD(dust wise)? Also would it be best to having it blowing beneith the HD or above it?
