The opticals are sharp, quick, and get rid of the annoying tracking problems the ball had.

The optical wireless suck except there is no ball.

Wireless mice are much more laggy than hardwired mice. Opticals 0wn over trackballs, but still... getting a wireless version defeats the purpose of the optical. You want a mouse that's more accurate, but you'll get one that doesn't move the pointer (or the reticle, in a game) very quickly at all. I played with one, and they suck hardcore.

I had no problems with any of my Intellimouse Opticals (both old and new ones).

But I have gone through 2 of them already since I guess they aren't built to be banged around. Fortunately, MS has an awesome warranty on them.
