What are some good optical speakers for the Power Mac G5? I've been looking at the Logitech Z-5500 now and have been thinking of getting those.

Unless I'm mistaken, the G5 doesn't have Dolby Digital Live capability so you might want to think about just going for an analog connection.

I'm not a mac guy at all. I don't even know what games are able to be played on the G5.

I would suggest not using an optical connection if gaming is important to you.
A digital connection would be good for music and movies though

Either way, $200 for a z-5500 set is a good deal. An analog connection for gaming and then you deciding what's better (analog or digital) for music and movies would be a good bet.

If you have the right hardware you can get analog signals to match that of optical technology.

I'm not doing any gaming at all on this G5. All my gaming is on my PC.

The speakers will be used mostly for music and movies on this G5.

z-5500s would be fine then hooked up via optical.

If you're doing mainly movies, you could get a better 2.1 set for the same price, but if you want surround sound for sure, then z-5500s are a good 5.1 bet for $200.

What are some good 2.1 speakers? I haven't seen many. But, I've been looking at those Soundstick II speakers since they will match with the Mac pretty well.

Klipsch promedias are a popular 2.1 set.
There are a couple newer Altec lansing sets
Swan m200s (those would be better with a sub if you like a lot of bass)
Klipsch 2.0 + a sub like the dayton 10" from partsexpress for $99 (would go well with the Swans too) or the 12" sub
Cheap stereo receiver and a set of bookshelf speakers

Those are all going to be analog sets though naturally (not that this is a disadvantage if the analog out on the G5 is decent)

How would the Klipsch promedia speakers compare to the Z-5500's?

You'll find lots of opinions on Klipsch vs Logitech and people saying one is better than the other, but a big difference is going to be with the subs. The Logitech subs are good at being really loud, but aren't really the best for music. The 2-way Klipsch satellites with tweeters are going to have a different sound then the Logitech fullrange satellites but as for one being better than the other it would probably be a good idea to go out and try to find somewhere that has some of these as demo units so you can see what appeals to you personally.

some 2.1 speakers offer extremely clear sound for less than fifty dollars. it all depends on the maker and what models you get. you don't always have to get the most expensive stuff to be satisfied, I could swear my Altec Lansig 30 dollar speakers sound much clearer than my RCA 500w speakers until you want the music REALLY loud you know what I mean?
