I have an aging tbird 1.2ghz workstation and now I want a new christmas present :)

I'm thinking about a dual opteron 240 system with 512MB DDR (which I already have pc2700)
The system is currently running Gentoo Linux and hopefully some form of Linux with the dual opteron as well.

The main thing I am concerned about is stability and price. So a "budget" board with minimal features is fine as long as it's stable.

I have a budget of about $250 USD for the motherboard itself but lower is better, I may have to start with just one opteron for now and add the second next payday.

Do you need anything onboard, like SCSI, video, etc...????

The MSI K8T Master2-FAR board looks nice. Dual opteron, gigabit ethernet, AGP port, etc... Goes for $222 at newegg.com

Now you do know that Opterons require REG. memory, and run in Dual Ch setup.
Also instead of getting 2 24X opterons, you can get 2 14X opterons and run them in Dual setup. RIGHT NOW the 1, 2, and 8 series opterons are pretty much all the same. AMD may change this, but for now it could save you some bucks.

yeah I just read about the memory and that the 140's will work.

I don't need scsi or onboard video. Onboard sound or lan would be nice but not necessary.
