Gioacchino Antonio Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia. In the 'States commonly called The Barber of Seville.

If you want to stick to the proven classics, Puccini, Verdi, Rossini and Mozart...if you want something easily recognizable, you can't forget Orff's one-hit-wonder "Carmina Burana", namely "O Fortuna".

I've seen the whole thing and it's good. But O Fortuana is of course the best part and most recognizable.

Mozart's Magic Flute (Die Zauberfloete) is pretty good, and a basic introduction to opera. By the way, the Carmina Burana isn't an opera.

Alot of Mascagni or Puccini's operas are pretty good. You may want to check out some of Katherine Jenkins stuff. Although she isn't technically an opera singer, she has a great voice.
