I recently got the Phantom of the Opera album, and wow, it quite uplifting..and it makes me feel really cultured and elite while listening to it.

So does anyone know of other albums that can provide me with this great uplifting and elitist feeling?

Phantom of the Opera is a musical genre called rock opera. It has absolutely no similarity to classic or modern opera. If you want some music to broaden your horizons and make you feel a bit more "cultured" while still being accessible, give Andrea Bocelli a try. He's an opera singer by trade, but does quite a few songs that are intended for a broader, American pop-style audience. Many will have heard his duet with Sarah Brightman, "Con te Partiro (Time to say goodbye)," but that's only his best-known work, not his best. His most recent album "Celini de Toscani" (Tuscan Skies) was written expressly for a mainstream audience, and will probably have quite a few songs on it that you'll like. Download "Le tue parole" and "Sogno" while you're at it.

The obvious choice here is the Three Tenors, or at the very least Luciano Pavarotti.

Or just get recordings of famous operas done by lesser singers.

*edit*
Phantom isn't really opera, it's showtunes. You're gay.

Not sorta. Is. Andrew Lloyd Weber did the music for Phantom of the Opera, which is why it sounds exactly like Jesus Christ Superstar, Cats, and most of the rest of the most popular musicals of the last quarter century. The only musicals which have really hit it big that wasn't scored by ALW recently are Rent and Les Miserables.

Don't you think it's better to ease someone into a new genre? I think that Phantom of the Opera to Bocelli is a pretty easy transition... he's heard ALW and likes it, do you think he'd be more apt to listen to and like Bocelli, or Wagner's Ring Cycle? Let him get his feet wet in the genre first, before we start dropping Puccini, Bizet, Donizetti, Rossini, and all the other greats on him :)

Try things like the Choral from Beethoven's Ninth, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, Wagner's Ride of the Valkerie, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Les Miserables, Madam Butterfly, Miss Saigon. If you listen to those over and over and even call in to your local public radio station requesting them you will be lauded for your deep cultured elitism.

In my opinion, none.

(SING IN ENGLISH ALLREADY!!)

But then I am a uncultured slob...............

No you're not. Even those who LIKE opera started off knowing pretty much one or two opera songs. And we knew them both from watching Bugs Bunny, "What's Opera Doc?" and the Barber of Seville episode. I don't think there's a person alive today who can't sing along to "Kill the waaa-bit, kill the waaaaaaaaaaaaa-bit!"

But that still doesn't mean that Bugs is the epitome of opera ;)

Hmmmmm, Pavarotti of course is good... you may have heard this one before:

Luciano Pavarotti - O amore, o bella luce del core

How about you Glenn1, you got any other suggestions similar to these?
