Good online PC games for 2 to 4 people?

This might be a bit "old school", but... Diablo 2?
Still kinda fun play occasionally with friends as either an ironman team or hardcore.

Exactly what I was thinking.

How about Company of Heroes coop or even better, rise of nations?

Also, hearts of Iron is hella fun if you're up for a slower game...but not appealing to the same people as L4D2

Saints Row 2 is fun co-op for two people. Master of Orion 2 is ancient, but fun for up to 8 people with DosBox. Borderlands is very popular as you can see in the thread, but I got it for free and still feel ripped off. It would certainly work though.

One that might be fun as long as you don't mind playing with other people too would be BFBC2. It's pretty fun to play when you've got a squad of 4 buddies and TS or Vent to communicate with.

Another vote for Borderlands here.

I play with a static co-op group and while most of the games mentioned here have been great, Borderlands has been the clear consensus favorite. The RPG mechanic of picking skills as you level (and being able to respec) lends a ton of replayability as each of the four classes can be played in at least two very different ways.

You might want to look for a bundle deal (steam periodically does it) with the Armory and Dr. Ned DLC since both are really excellent and the Armory DLC pushes the level cap from 50 to 61.

DotA, League of Legends, or Heroes of Newerth. These games have a steep learning curve, but it's not as bad if you're learning with your friends.

RTS - Age of Mythology, StarCraft, Dawn of War.
TBS - Disciples 2. Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Heroes of Might and Magic 5.
FPS - Counterstrike, Left 4 Dead, Jedi Outcast, Jedi Academy.
H n S - Diablo 2, Titan Quest. (Can you set up a private area with just 4 players?)
