I've heard a lot of good oldies songs, but not really sure on their names or artists. I can certainly recognize them though when I hear them...

Stuff like the Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Creedence Clearwater...

Anyone got any specifics?

Especially ones with good guitar in them, but also just generally more popular ones that I've probably heard (I'm 21) but don't know the names of.

Most of these guys have been in several bands:

Joe Walsh (Barnstorm, James Gang, The Eagles, also some solo work)
Eric Clapton (The Yardbirds, Cream, Derek & the Dominoes, lots of solo stuff)
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)

And some others. I'll have to think about it for a minute.

As for just music from that period, I listen to it all the time; everything from the 60's up to some point in the 80s is, I believe, what is considered to be "classic rock".

Other than the bands already listed, others from the period are: ZZ Top, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Steve Miller Band, Aerosmith, Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, Paul Simon (and Simon & Garfunkel, for that matter) Santana, Bad Company, Van Halen, Steely Dan, and probably quite a few others I can't think of at the moment :)

Ah, another good one. Trivia note: John Fogerty (who wrote most of the songs for CCR) is, I believe, the only person to ever be sued for plagarizing himself :p

One of my favorite bands from high school in the mid-70's was the Doobie Brothers. Patrick Simmons was just awesome on guitar. Black Water, Jesus is just Alright, Long Train Running, Taking it To the Streets, etc....

Didn't get much better than that.

Other stuff from then with some great guitar: Nazareth (Hair of the Dog), Ted Nugent, Rush, Mountain (Mississippi Queen).

If you liked the one - off stuff, the Alan Parsons Project was pretty hot, as well as the Talking Heads.

Some more great ones.... I liked the Guess Who's music, with Randy Bachman, and then when he left them and formed Bachman-Turner Overdrive, they were pretty hot for a while, too.

Classical Gas was Mason Williams..

Blue Oyster Cult was the first concert I ever went to, and was opened by Golden Earring (Radar Love) in 1975..... God, I feel old.....

100 ELO - Don't Bring Me Down
--"Fire on High" is another good one from these guys

90 Grateful Dead - Touch Of Grey
--I'm surprised this one didn't rank higher.

82 Manfred Mann - Blinded By The Light
--written by Bruce Springsteen, of all people :p

80 Grand Funk Railroad- We're An American Band
--"I'm your Captain / Closer to Home"

50 Steppenwolf - Born To Be Wild
--quite a few good ones from these guys. "It's Never too Late", "Snowblind Friend", "The Pusher", "Who needs Ya"...
40 Eric Clapton - Cocaine
--Try to find the live version of this one, if you can - Awesome, 8- or 9-minute long jam.

38 Boston - More Than A Feeling
--Another band I didn't think of, and one of my favorites. "Amanda", "Rock & Roll Band", "Smokin'", "Foreplay / Long Time" "Peace of Mind", "Don't Look Back", "Feelin' Satisfied", "Tell Me", and a few others, too.

35 Kansas - Carry On My Wayward Son
--another band with quite a few good songs. Check out "Dust in the Wind", "Hold on", and "Point of no Return", too.

32 Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird
--"Tuesday's Gone", "The Last Rebel", "Simple Man"

28 Jethro Tull - Aqualung
--I like "Locomotive Breath" and "Steel Monkey"

21 Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin
--I like the Moody Blues, but for some reason don't care too much for this song.

Alot of great ones already listed so I don't want to repeat anything, but one artist that I really like is Robin Trower. His album Bridge of Sighs has some incredible guitar work. Whatever became of him?

Wow, another one I loved. "Somebodies Calling" off of the "In City Dreams" album was phenominal.... AFAIK, he is still performing.....

Wow, thanks all! A big list, but I'll definitely save it and get to checking out most of them. Now I need to find a friend who is into oldies... or maybe I just should hit up my dad, lol.

Kind of funny, I recognize some of the names listed mostly because I've heard covers of them (I mostly listen to punk). But I've also definitely heard a few of those listed, so I think they are what I'm looking for. Again, thanks a bunch... I dig this stuff.
