Good OCing Socket A Mobo+DDR Combo for $150?

Um... topic says it all... in the market for a new Chipset...

Anyone know a good OCing Socket A Mobo + DDR Combo for $150?

I don't care too much about all that onboard crap, so just the basics + good ram would be suitable.

If it goes according to plan... I plan on using an AthlonXP 1600+ AGOIA...

Thoughts... ideas?

I'd also like to add, I'd like support for future Socket A processors (its no guarantee, but perhaps, Barton compatiable, or even the newer XPs using 166fsb)...

How much ram would be neccessary, and how fast would the ram need to be (pc2700?)? I game occasionally.

Thanks...

Here's one option...

The Epox 8K5A2 for $87 @ Mwave and a 256mb stick of Kingmax PC3200 (DDR400) for $65 @ Kommax.com. That is just a shade over what you wanted to spend @ $152.

🙂

Thanks for the suggestion Insane3d. How well does that motherboard Overclock? I get confused with Epox's motherboards, as they have so many different kinds, and so many different names. Have any ideas how high will the FSB on the motherboard go?

And how well do you think that RAM will do? Its running PC3200... isn't that capable of 200mhz fsb? Plus some overclocking room on it... 210-215fsb with that ram?

Anyone else have any ideas?

Thanks!

The Epox has consistently hit 200mhz+ FSB in the reviews I've seen. As far as it being able to o/c, the board is basically designed to do just that..o/c the crap out of your CPU. The Kingmax PC3200 is guaranteed to run 200mhz with no voltage bumping, so with a little bump in the juice it should be possible to go above that...how much depends on the individual stick, board, etc. 🙂

Wow, the motherboard seems to be a very nice overclocker... hope it does well with my incoming AROIA-Y XP1600+. Do the other Epox boards overclock that well also? It seems to be at a pretty good price, but if I can skimp on features I really don't need, I'm hoping to save some money (As I don't have much)...

You really need to be a little more specific, but in my experience the Epox boards o/c very well. You should have good results with the AROIA 1600+, some of them are hitting 1.8ghz with default voltage. The Epox allows up to 2.2v on the vcore without any modification..🙂

Wow, its a very nice

board.

Though, I really don't need the intergrated sound, and I really don't need USB2.0 too much (might be needed in future, but I see no current use for it)...

How is the intergrated sound on these? I'm using an old Soundblaster Live if I recall correctly.

I was asking if theres a board similar to it, for a bit cheaper price, without all those features, that overclock just as good.

Thanks for all the advice so far!

Hrm... seems both are good motherboards...

I've made up my mind, I'll go with either of those, and depending on my cash at the time, I'll pick the one with features or not.

Insane3d:

Thank you for all the help! These Epox boards look fantastic!

Hrm... after posting nearly the same topic in the Overclocking forum..

Someone told me this about Epox Motherboards..

Any ideas, should I reconsider? Has this happened to anyone else?
