So, if the Taliban were to create a small nation in the southern desert of California and defend it for a period of time, who would the the antagonist, The Taliban or the US attacking this 'new' country?

How about if The Taliban's new nation occuppied some people at its border, who provided bases for attacking it, and kept them in poverty and lockdown?

What if The Taliban justified doing this by the violence inflicted on it by the US and USSR the past few decades? All they want is a peaceful land of their own, and you keep attacking them.

I might also add that the story of Israel's creation has been enacted in a much larger way with greater tragedy during the whole process when the state of Pakistan was created. Mind you, this was not because the Muslims had been "discriminated" against let alone subject to extermination like the Jews were (in fact the Muslims were part of the ruling class of pre-partition India); it was because the founders of Pakistan claimed that they WOULD be discriminated against if a country was formed where they would be a minority. An even more bizarre partition than that of the state of Israel was concocted where a meat-cleaver was used to hack out the border, leaving a trail of slaughter, pain and suffering and a state whose one half was separated by the other by more than a thousand miles (not unlike the West Bank and Gaza). I bring this up to show you that such a state has already been created that is of a magnitude greater size that has been accepted by the country out of which it was carved, but dysfunctional Pakistan has become a menace to the whole world precisely because it has chosen the same path in your conjecture while India, by fits and starts, is on it's path to becoming a vibrant democracy.

The Arab world in particular and the Muslim world at large would do well if they heed the lesson from Israel that they will go out of their way to protect their citizens using whatever means necessary rather than as cannon fodder in their futile, dead-end ideological war.

You raise a good issue to discuss with what should have been done with Pakistan.

Along with sausage and making laws, making countries has to be included as an ugly activity.

We don't really have great answers. We don't even have them that match any principles for our own states - just 'whatever history resulted in' leaving 40 million Californians the same in the Senate as Wyoming.
