Good MS Word / Office replacement?

For my home computer, so $$ is important. Let's say sub $200.

I used to use Office 2008 at work and it used to way too sluggish, even on a modern core 2 duo system. I see myself only using word but a suite couldn't hurt. Suggestions?

I tried iWork but pages has proven to be flaky with office compatibility - it added borders and other weird formatting stuff to my word documents.

Also am downloading NeoOffice right now and will give it a whirl, but I remember openoffice being quite slugging so doubt this will be better.

Wait on Office 2011. I am running beta 4 of it now and it is much much better than Office 2008. Plus it has Outlook!

+1. Get OpenOffice in the mean time if you have to. I'm surprised iWork didn't work out, though. Good luck!

Thanks guys - I'll try out bean and installed open office as suggested. So far so good! Will give me time to wait on office 2011..

I too was a bit surprised that my resume, created in office 2000 on the pc, opened in Pages with a bunch of formatting that was not supposed to be there. It was a bit of an oddly formatted page since I used tables instead of just a bulleted list though, still, this shouldn't be the case.

Document opened fine under open office, so it'll do until office 2011 comes out.

Speaking of of2011 - is it an open beta? I wish I still had MSDN!
