instead of peddling at the gym, which i hate, i'm looking to get a good mountain bike.

my budget is $300-$500. the lower the better. again i say, the lower the better.

anyone have any recommendations on what i should get?

nice bike... i'm pretty tempted.

i've made an offer on a Trek 4500. let's see if he bites at $250. the reviews on the Motobecane are extremely good. and the price is less than half the retail. but, i'm just getting into this right now. so i figure $250 for a "great bang for the buck" bike will suffice until i make this a much more serious hobby.

Check Craigslist. I picked up a two year old Fuel 80 for about $500 last year. Was in brand new conditoin as well, still had the nubs on the tires.

That's a nice bike but I would add that there will be some assembly required (comes partially assembled) and you will probably want to have it checked out by a competent mechanic to make sure it was assembled properly.

Good recommendation. :) I would actually recommend the best Gary Fisher that he can afford in his target price range.

Get a Landrider. Never manually switch gears again! Oh yeah, it's not a mountain bike. :(

For a new bike: the Raliegh M50 DX was recommended by Gear recently.

edit I don't know what happened to this sentence:MSRP is $425...the components on it are really good.

If $500 and used is an option...there are a lot of possibilities.

I sold a Marin Bear Valley SE a long time ago for a few hundred bucks in like new condition (it was a college commute bike)...paid 3x that new.
