I'm using a voice activated recording software to monitor voices in my apartment. I sure I won't be able to monitor the entire apartment but I want to do the best I can. I'm using a audigy 2 zs so I think I have a good enough quality soundcard. I just need a decent quality mic that can pick up sounds from far away.
 
There's a type of microphone called an "array" microphone that lets you talk to your computer from around your office. I don't think they're cheap though.
