Well, I tried to buy some in the FS/FT forum, but I didn't get any reponses (as of yet) so it looks like I'm going to have to pay full retail pricing. Well, since its gonna be that much $, I was wondering if anybody has any recommendations for which brand or books to buy? How about the online courses? I can't really afford to spend that much $ on this, I'm hoping less than $150 for the core four exams. LMK what you think.

Have a Happy New Year,
Eric

I'd definatly recommend the Sybex books... I read the NT 4.0 Workstation Study Guide one and it was A LOT easier to read and not nearly as boring as the Microsoft Press stuff.. and they're about $100 cheaper for the whole MCSE kit too.. about $150 I think...

ONe of the guys @ work used the sybex complete series and passed the upgrade to 2000 exam. That exam has like a 10-12% pass rate. Let's just say I plan on getting them soon. Sybex rocks the house.

Sybex generally gives a bit better description as to the concept... I find that I like to read the sybex, and then use exam cram to pound in the major things

Sybex are great to learn off of. The Examcram books are great to do just that... to CRAM! Used them for my N+ and my MCSE test (the ones I've taken). Also O'Reilly books are great to learn from too... reading the Win 2000 Active Directory book now and its great.

In My experience, the examcarm books were good, but not if you didnt already have a solid knowledge of the subject. The sybex books are terrific (They're sitting here next to me right now :p) Shell out the cash and get them. TryAddall.com. Its a price searhc engine for books that computes shipping rates, etc.

Sybex books are great. Not sure how they are for the 2000 track, but for the NT4 track they were excellent. Exam Cram are ONLY good for pre-exam refresher. Read through them the night before or the morning of just to refresh the major things, NOT to learn the whole thing from.

I hate to be the grinch, but the Sybex books got a horrendous rap on the mcsebraindumps.com boards. Lots of misinformation apparently. I'd suggest you do some research on the exam-dump websites. I used Sams and Ace-It to get through NT4 MCSE, and am trying New Riders 70-219 Directory Services Design and Syngress 70-240 Accelerated. I think I prefer the Syngress book's style but my overall favourite was Sams. That's what my next book will be.

On a side note, if you're trying to do it on the cheap, go for the Accelerated exam - it's free and it covers the 4 core exams (but be prepared to study your ass off).

/Edit: I thought I should re-trace my source (/me trying not to be a FUD-spreader). There are a few conflicting opinions on the Sybex but this one made me pause for thought. I'll add that the Resource Kit seems to be consistently highly recommended. So there you go. Give it a look, I've been a regular visitor there since getting 966 on the 70-073 exam with its help.
