Good LCD option to game at 1024*768..17" or 19"?

I am planning to move on from my 17"CRT to a 17" or a "19" LCD.
I always game at 1024* 768 and wouldnt want to change the res when I move to a LCD.

Will the display quality remain the same if I go in for a 17" or a 19" LCD..keeping the res at 1024*768?

I want to go in for a square monitor and not the widescreen ones.
Are there any other comparable moniters available?

My vendor told me that only Dell makes square 17/19" monitors, E17OS & E19OS.

Which would be better considering my need, 17" or a 19"?

I am a bit confused and would appreciate some help.

They way monitors are made these days a 19" model will likely be a piece of junk not worth gaming on.

If we were to ignore image quality...

Buy something like this. It is an 18.5" 1366x768 resolution wide-screen LCD. The reason is that you can run at 1024x768 and disable resolution scaling, and have a pixel perfect picture, albeit with black bars on the sides. See how the vertical resolution is an exact match? Note that most of these monitors are intended to be really cheap and have only VGA input and no DVI/HDMI. The one I linked to is refurbished, but has DVI input.

^ Zap's suggestion seems a good way to meet OP's requirements, as most "square" 17"/19" LCDs are 5:4 (1280x1024) and not a good fit to 1024x768.

I have a 4850 and Crysis plays really smooth at 1024*768, high on XP.
Same goes with all PC titles released till date...

It's just my feeling that if I bump up the res to a native res of a normal widescreen lcd (1366*768)...the frame rate will take a nose dive....I could be wrong though.

Looks like almost everyone is moving on to a widescreen display.
So if the frames would remain preety much same....I dont mind going in for a widescreen.

Just need more info from you guys.....as vendors here dont seem to know much w.r.t lcd + res + gaming.

They mostly sell based on bigger is better......could be true for normal pc usage....but I am not so sure that this holds true for gaming.

For gaming you miss out on a lot of the game running at such a low res, i find 1600x900 to be the smallest i will go and i prefer to go 2560x1600 when the game permits 😉

Just do what Zap says and run the widescreen at 1024x768 for gaming. You'll get to enjoy the native resolution outside of gaming as well.
