Good jazz music?

Actually I'm looking for stuff a lot like the "Family Guy" theme music - except without the words. Upbeat, good trumpet/bass/sax/piano. Stuff you hear from good high school jazz bands, you know? Thanks.

Oh yeah, and then there's that guy Miles Davis. He's ok too...

Not exactly what you're after but if you want good jazz he's your man.

While I must admit to loving Glen Miller, I have to point out that "In The Mood" is way up near the top of the most overplayed songs list. Right with "Chariots of Fire" and "Linus and Lucy" (aka Peanuts theme).

It's an absolute shame that almost all anyone knows about Vince Guaraldi is "Linus and Lucy".

Hey guys I'm back from demoing a LOT of music.

I found that I absolutely love The Seatbelts, they've got some really good stuff. But a lot of their stuff isn't jazz either, so I had to demo each one. FYI they do all the music from "Cowboy Bebop."

Also got the classics like Rhapsody in Blue (the one from Fantasia 2000), Sing Sang Sung (I think that's what it's called) and some others.
 
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue
John Coltrane - Favorite Things
Thelonious Monk - Underground

Each are all great introductions to Jazz. There's a lot of excellent stuff out there; these three albums only scratch the surface.
 
I actually tried some Miles Davis along with Dizzy and some other stuff...first I'll tell you guys that I don't really like vocals in this kind of music (unless it's brief) I dunno why, I guess it just takes my ears away from the actual music. Also I like lots of instruments like trumpets and saxes and what. I know Thelonious Monk is basically just piano (I have a Monk fake book) and I'm looking more for big band or jazz orchestra or whatever they call it.
 
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue has no vocals in it. Widely regarded as one of the best jazz albums of all time.
 
No one has mentioned Duke Ellington? He's done everything jazz, including big band. The trouble is his portfolio is so enormous that it might be difficult to find the specific music you want.

Sorry I can't think of any titles off the top of my head, but I'm listening to the Duke Ellington Centennial Edition right now, so if I hear anything I'll post it. 😛
 
Take the A train by the Duke is awesome some. Also, Caravan is another great song.

Also, what is the difference between Big Band and Swing? I'm a little hazy on my Jazz at the moment even though i took a course entitled "the History of Jazz."
 
Miller/Dorsey/Goodman are how to do I put it.... umm... white sounding if ya know what I mean. Ellington and Basie had arguably the best big bands ever but like someone stated their repetoire is huge. Some other big bands to look into are Stan Kenton, Woody Herman and the Thundering Herd, Maynard Ferguson, John Clayton, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Airmen of Note, Doc Severinson Tonight Show Band, Clarke-Boland Band, Village Vanguard, Mingus Big Band, North Texas State One O'Clock Band, The Army Band, Matt Catingub, Tom Kubis, Don Ellis, James Morrison, Gene Harris All Stars, GRP All Stars, Harry Connick Jr's Big Band, McCoy Tyner, Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Louie Bellson, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis... umm those are what I can name off the top of my head. If anyone else knows all those bands, damn I give you props.

I would think of swing as a subtype of jazz. Usually involves a "straight ahead" feel and it's good for dancing to. There are many types of jazz like latin, bebop, swing, dixieland, cool, acid, free, etc. I don't really know any other way of describing it other than saying it's a particular style of jazz.
