I have a working knowledge of JAVA, but certainly do not consider myself advanced as I would like to be. My main problem is creating GUIS. Its very frustrating for me, because it seems like using AWT and SWING is trail by error. I want to get to a point where I can have a good idea of what the GUI would look like prior to compiling the code. I would like to re-train myself again concentrating on GUI, but also getting a better knowledge of JAVA as a whole. I used a book when I first started out (Java in 60 Minutes A Day), but it started to suck at the end and I really didn't learn as much as I would have liked.
Here is what I have in my shopping cart so far at Amazon:
Head First Java, 2nd Edition
Java Examples in a Nutshell, 3rd Edition
Java in a Nutshell, 5th Edition
Java 5 Illuminated: An Active Learning Approach
What do you guys think of these books, and if there are any better ones out there in addition to or to replace some on my list.
Cost is not really a factor, because I want to learn JAVA for real this time. But I also don't want to spend a lot of money on crap books that don't have any substance.
I know C++ and VB6 and I know that learning a Language takes practice. However I would like a good base to practice from. No more "21 days", "24 hour" books.
