edit: oh you said non-warez, got me there

He wasn't asking about mIRC.

blah blah blah, same f'n difference

Not even close.

first of all it was a joke since he was banned for mentioning his IRC habits, secondly who gives a shiit what interface you use to connect to IRC

I'm sure it was a joke, but that's a pet peeve. mIRC is crap and too many morons think it _is_ IRC.

I'll take a look... I just bought a Mac and I was hoping to get into it fairly quickly. I've been trying to setup X11 in it using fink etc.

Hmm the client I'm using (ircle) doesn't seem to list usenet...

Usenet isn't IRC, it's newsgroups. 😛

X11 is easy to setup if you download it from Apple. 😉

Well XFree86 was installed because it was a requirement for nmap when I went "fink install nmap" I have the icon XDarwin in Finder now, and when I load it, I get two options about display... what should I do with that? Also after I load it, will it work for anything using X and display properly? Thanks n0cmonkey

If you think I should just get the one from apple instead, and try and delete the stuff fink installed I'll do it, but I'm on dialup, so if there isn't much point I'd rather not 🙂

This is in the wrong forum now. 😛

The two options are something like rootless and root window. You probably want rootless so it is just a layer on top of the Apple desktop.

It's worked for pretty much everything I tried it for. Never really had any problems with it, except speed. 😉

I know it's kinda pushing the bounds of "Off Topic" since it's becoming on topic 😉

Someone told me the X package is on one of the OS X discs, but I couldn't manage to find it...I just loaded it now, how do I know if it's working? lol I remember when my buddy loaded it up he'd have it in the menu bar, I remember seeing X11 sitting there, but after I click rootless it seems to disappear. I tried using ssh x forwarding but it says it cannot connect to the X server...(I'll move this soon if I can't figure it out 😉)

I haven't used XDarwin in a while. It should bring up a couple of xterms. Try clicking the icon in the dock for it (it should have a little triangle under neath it).

I think it's not working... I'm not sure I have gtk and stuff properly setup. I'm a HUGE OS X noob, but I'm trying to change my ways 🙂 It's not in the dock which I just realized isn't a good sign since every other program I've used I've been able to find again. Are there any good sites for Unix stuff under OS X?.. I've been taking a quick look around on google and I haven't come across anything really good yet..

Half the reason I bought this was because of the nice operating system on top of a BSD kernel etc. because I have to do so much work (school) in a Unix environment windows seemed a bad choice (plus I'd have to support Microsoft buying a PC 😱😉) If I can't figure it out from reading some extra stuff I'll move this to another forum 🙂

I don't have any links off hand. You can probably check /var/log or something to see if it left any logs.
