LITE-ON LTD-166S(might also go by the name XJ-HD166S), TEAC DV-516(I hope I got the name right) or Pioneer 117 or 116.
Plextor will also release a 16/48 DVD-ROM drive soon, and I bet that will be a good option as well.

Another vote for Pioneer. I've got an old (close to 3 years) 105S that I've never had a serious problem with. I do have two minor nitpicks though: it's loud, and it gets pretty warm if it's running for any decent length of time. Audio extraction on the drive (using EAC) is slow, too. That said, it has read/played everything I've thrown at it, so I'm not complaining.

Just got a Lite-On 166s 16/48 DVD to replace my A-Open 52x CD-Rom, love this Lite-On. It is fast, smooth a quiet. Also have a LiteOn CD-RW, not the newest and lastest, but it hasn't let me down yet. Yes, I think this board does have many Lite-On fans, and I can see why.
Cheers,

there's a new firmware for that drive dated 25th march 2003.
nero infotool indicates that with this new firmware the drive will now read every type of media!
