Good, inexpensive 19" LCDs & Interpolation on 2005FPW

So I'm gonna bite the bullet and get an LCD in the near future, too bad I missed the 2005fpw deal.

My main hesitation with getting the 2005fpw is that I won't be able to run many games @ the native res, even with my 7800gt. How bad is interpolation on the 2005fpw?
Also, at the lower "widescreen" res (1280x800, 1440x900?) can you force most modern games to run @ that?

How about some good, fairly cheap 19" LCDs? I'm not super picky about the kind of stuff some people are anal about on here, I really don't think I need nor can I justify spending $400+ on a 19" LCD.

I would really prefer to have a high res screen for 2D use, but I'm not sure how that will effect gaming.

TIA!

As long as you add the lower 16:10 resolutions (1280x800, etc.) to your video drivers, you should be able to select or force those resolutions in most games. Interpolation is really not bad at all - IMO you could even use lower resolutions for text/Windows usage (though I'm not sure why you'd want to). Also, I still run most of my games at 1680x1050 on my 6800GT (at Ultra speeds), and as long as I don't use AA, they still run pretty well (excluding FEAR - but that game is a whole other issue entirely). So your 7800GT should be mostly fine at native resolution unless you want to turn everything and anything on, as far as detail settings - and if you do want to do that, then lower resolutions are still quite usable.

I'm worried about COD2 & FEAR: my pet projects for X-Mas break :D

So I take it you have a 2005FPW? I really want a high res for 2D stuff, but wanna make sure I'm not gonna shoot myself in the foot with games.

Yeah, I have a 2005FPW - have had it since January and am very happy with it. ;)

I've not yet experimented with FEAR that much, but based on the demo numbers I've run, I should (barely) be able to run it at 1280x800 playably (which is pretty ridiculous, but as I said is another discussion altogether). COD2 I don't have either, so I can't comment on it. My personal plan is to wait until maybe next summer, around the time UT2007 shows up, and then throw away some money for a video card upgrade :p

I don't think you'll regret it at all if you get a 2005FPW...it's awesome for both gaming and 2D stuff, IMO...the only thing I would possibly warn about at this point is the upcoming release of the 2007 with HDCP support, but if you do not plan to watch "protected" HD content in the future (I do), then it won't be an issue for you.

Eh, HDCP crap is the least of my worries. I actually "need" to do this upgrade since my desk is moving into the living area and not what used to be a spare bedroom, so the bulky ol' Viewsonic 19" CRT has to go ;) EDIT Or so says the gf!

Say, wanna sell your 2005FPW now and save up for the 2007? ;)

lol, the last thing I need right now is an excuse to spend more money :p

I'm sad to say I missed the 2005FPW deal, I talked myself out of it at that time. *Kicks myself* Now I "need" it, sheesh

I paid $520 (+tax) for my 2005FPW in January, any price you'll pay for it these days will be quite a bit cheaper ;)

:p

The only reason why I'm not so eager to sell my 2005 right now, is because I have a strong feeling that the 2007's are going to be really expensive at introduction, compared to the current discounted 2005 price...

Hold on, let me check...

Edit: OK, go to 'Screen Resolutions & Refresh Rates', then there's a 'Custom resolutions and refresh rates' section; click the Add button there and you should be able to add any resolution (16:10 or otherwise).

I only have a 9800Pro and can still play a lot of my games at 1680x1050. That is all HL2/Source, Savage (good game heh), UT2004, and Guild Wars. New ones like BF2 I can't quite, and well of course FEAR is completely out of the option. But with a 7800GT I would still get the 2005 FPW. When its like $350 that is not much more than quality 19" LCDs.

Yes you can use lower widescreen resolutions, or 4:3 resolutions. They don't look that bad. I play BF2 at 1024x768 stretched to about 1360x1050 with black bars on the side. I need a better video card though, you should be fine with most games for a while.

I just bought this LCD monitor, which is a widescreen 19" LCD.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116373

I should get it tomorrow. It has larger pixels than the 2005FPW (which is good for me) and needs less power to drive at native resolution. The power needed to drive at native resolution is about the same as a 1280 x 1024 19" LCD, which a 7800 GT should be able to drive.

That Viewsonic widescreen happens to be a TN monitor. This may or may not be an issue for you (fbrdphreak).

Comparison Between Dell 2005 and Viewsonic 1912wb

Dell (S-IPS, similar to Apple 20" Widescreen)
More Pixels (36% more)
Larger (5%)
Wider Viewing Angles (IPS to TN)
8-bit Color (TN has 6-bit)
Adjustable Stand (Hieght, Swivel, Pivot)
USB Hub
S-Video/Composite Connectors (Only good for emergency use really)
Nifty Features (Pip, Pbp, etc)

Viewsonic (TN, unique monitor)
Better Response Time (8ms TN vs 12 ms S-IPs --> 20 to 24 average response on both panels)
Nice Price!
Integrated Speakers

Viewsonic is good for use on solitary/stantionay gaming use

Dell is a better all-around monitor for gaming, picture editing, movie watching, etc

The Viewsonic is a good monitor for the price if you can live with the shortcommings of a TN panel. Edit: It really is a Very good gaming monitor for the price. There is a reason Apple uses IPS panels for thier very expensive monitors...
