Good idea to change the router ip?

Since routers seem to be either 192.168.1.1 or 0.1 should I change the ip to something like 192.168.7.1 for an added layer of protection?

Yes I changed the admin password. Why doesn't Linksys let you pick a user name too?

Setup the wireless security with wpa2 with tkip+aes using a 63 character ASCII key at: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm and turned off ssid broadcasting and turned on mac filtering for my devices. Left the default firewall and VPN settings on. Even changed the wifi channel.

What about custom firmware? Even worth it?

So is this a pretty good setup?

No reason to turn off SSID broadcasting, other then that sounds just fine.

Turing Off SSID does nothing for security and in most cases destabilizes the Wireless connection.

You're pretty much secure. That WPA2 encryption pretty much keeps anyone from snooping and using your connection. The SSID Broadcasting and MAC filtering really does nothing but keep amateurs away, if someone really wanted to get on your network it wouldn't protect you.

If you have DHCP enabled, changing the IP address is not going to help at all.

Even if you don't it doesn't take much sniffing to figure out which box is the gateway.

The only thing you need is a good WPA key and everything else is not only not necessary, it doesn't accomplish anything and only adds the "pain in the ass" factor.

If somebody has your key then I can find out exactly what IP addresses are live on your network as well as your gateway, what kind it is and what services it is running along with any other device you have. This would take maybe 30 seconds to know exactly what is on your network.

Just use a good key over 10-12 characters long and nobody is getting in or able to read your traffic. The key doesn't have to be overly complicated either, a few words thrown together with a symbol or number between them is fine.

For example at home I use "UcantcrackDIS4hammertime"

So changing your router ip to log in from the default to simply changing one of the digits doesn't help hide from the not so elite snoopers?

none at all. Your gateway is generally sending out broadcasts. Plus if you have a decent key they won't be able to snoop anything.

Oh duh cause they would have to first access your wifi to even be able to access the router ip. Also crack the password too. I dunno what I was thinking....
