I'm looking into other options for my HD's..... SO far all my Maxtor's have been making strange highpitched sounds, and i wont even go near IBM right now (dont want to deal with it) so im looking into alternatives....

Can i get some recommendations? Must be 7200rpm drives. I was thinking maybe WD or Seagate had something i was looking for. Must be quick, quiet and reliable. :) Thanks.

Well if you're worried about noise, get the Seagate Barracuda IV.

So far good words for Seagate... :) Has anyone had problems with them? Do they have any known possible defects or problems?

<< I was just wondering which Maxtor you have. >>

The Maxtor DiamondMax60's (Maxtor drives >> (Ultra ATA-100, 7200rpm))

They're great drives, it's just that ive hit a string of them that have been making this irritating high pitched "whirring" sound. I'm just doing some research on other brands.

Western Digital drives have been really impressive lately. WD1000BB-SE (Special Edition with 8 MB buffer instead of 2 MB) is hands down the best IDE drive in existence. According to StorageReview.com, it beats most high-end SCSI drives, getting close to even Seagate X15-36LP.

The Special Edition is pretty expensive and hard to find. But the normal WD1000BB and WD1200BB are still beating most IDE drives in performance.

Stop kidding yourself, the Special Edition is only good for one benchmark, the WinBench99, everything else is just mediocre, beat out by Maxtor and IBM in most other tests. Not even close to touching SCSI drives.

Bit exotic perhaps, but Fujitsu make some fine and rather silent drives (some of them with fluid bearings!). They are leaving the 3,5" arena though so that's not ideal if you are looking for a long term supply.

Seagate makes great scsi drives..but i'm a little wary of their IDE's....so if you're truly anti-maxtor and anti-IBM, i'd probably suggest going with some form of WD

but that's just my $.02

I'd be wary of Fujitsu drives, I've had nothing other than problems with the likes of them. However, the same could be said of Maxtor a couple years back.

I second the WD drives. They seem to be taking the place of the IBM´s in terms of speed and quality(now that IBM has this high RMA rate, although none of the 12 IBM drives I know of has ever shown signs)

LXi, if you read the storage review of the WD drives, you will notice that they are quite the performer. I would not say they beat IBM or MAxtor at every bench, but they really show top speed in tests where IDE drives are normaly way lower then SCSI drives.(I am an SCSI fan myself, but have to admit that)

Best choice seems to be the 80gig WD800BB. Lot of storage and good price.

Guess i'm in luck. The store where i buy all my PC parts ( A-Power ) stocks Maxtor, IBM, Seagate, Western Digital, and Fujitsu... Among others... :) I'm not anti-Maxtor, it's just that ive grown a bit weary about my luck with thier drives over time, they have served me well for the last 12 months, but it's time to move on. Seagate and WD look to be solid choices. But im still torn.

well, ive always been a diehard quantum fan.
had an an old 170meg (brand new Acer 486 SX-25 eons ago now :), a 1.2 fireball, and now a 30 gig LM plus.
now maxtor has sorta absorbed them (still not sure how that works, guess no more quantum name ?, or no more quantum period ?) so i dont know.
i still have a kinda bad mental image of maxtor from years ago when they where about the only shelfed HD and werent to great.
ive got a friend that had probs with 2 WD's. and i didnt even realize Seagate made IDE's.
Fujitsu's are great but not so easy to find now (and of course the support issue just in case).

now that i think about it, i really hope my quantum holds up for a good long while :)
