Good HP Laptop CPU question...

Hi all...

I have one of the HP 5125 walmart laptops. I know you can interchange CPU's in this model. I have a 500 Celeron in it. I bought a 1000Mhz to drop in to see what it would do. When I boot the laptop it see's the CPU as PIII 1000Mhz/256Cache. But, when I run any Sysinfo utils like Sisoft Sandra it says the CPU is ony running 697Mhz.

All of the Intel Speedstep stuff is turned off.

WinXP says 697Mhz and so does WinME.

Is there something in the OS that could be limiting the speed ?

Ofcourse HP says you can't swap out the CPU's, so they are quite useless.

Anyone know who might be able to help me ? Or a site I could post this question to ?

Thanks.. Jake

If you dont mind me asking, where did you buy the cpu? I have a compaq 1800 that had a celeron 500 and I swapped it with a p3 600 but cant find the 1000.

I got the CPU from ebay... If it doesn't work right .. I'd be willing to sell it..

It's not a BUS speed issue that I know of. The P3/1000Mhz has a 100FSB..

I just think it's odd that it seeis the speed at 700Mhz, even though the laptop BIOS sees the CPU as 1000Mhz...

I shall put linux on it tonight to double check that MS software isn't the cause..

Jason
