I'd like to go there for the days between Christmas and New Years.

Since I'm a military member I could stay at the Hale Koa for cheap, but would like to know if there are better places for the money.

Any tips on what to do on the island would be appreciated too :)

good and cheap usually don't go together when booking hotels in exotic locations.

Royal Hawaiian and Kahala are my faves.

turtle bay and that crap gets too pricey for me to enjoy it.

moana was getting redone last time I was on the island.

I would check out another island personally, like Maui, but that's just me. That's high season so expect to pay 1.5x summer rates for flight and hotels, but it's worth it if you live somewhere cold.

Couldn't be more wrong.

Nowhere places = cheap but hardly good.

Exotic touristy places = Big demand, big hotels = Perfect way to find great hidden or last-minute deals.

I paid $80 for 5-star Trump in Vegas for their SUITE using Hotwire. It had this huge jacuzzi-sized personal bath tub with built-in TV, living room, and immaculate decor. I think regular price was $250-300.

GF and I scored $450 for 4-night all-inclusive to this amazing resort that INCLUDED AIRFARE (wtf). $450 for 4 nights of unlimited food, ALCOHOL, & airfare (home flight was direct flight to Boston, wtf).

Good stuff.

if you can stay at the hale koa, do it! i think the price is pretty good. how much is a room there? if you dont want to be in waikiki, there are plenty of places you can stay at. just got to look for deals or private vacatoin rentals.

i've been to oahu more times than i can count

I don't like O'ahu. Too big of a city with all the big city problems...traffic, crime, crowded, etc.

You're probably not gonna find anyplace CHEAP during the Christmas weeks. Those are premium...with premium pricing in Hawaii.
Many places are double rates during that time of year.

I stayed in Ramada of Waikiki... was pretty awesome. Was decent and location wise not bad. Be sure to rent some freakin' scooters and scoot around the whole damn island... best fun I had... besides laying on the damn beach for hours on end suffering sun burn.

Just stay near Waikiki, cause once you start going inland Honolulu looks pretty run down.

This only works if you do last min.

The answer to this question depends upon wether you own a Mac or not. Do you?

We stayed at the Grand Waikikian at the Hilton Hawaiian Village last Christmas, and really enjoyed the stay. We had a two bedroom suite for the family and it had a full kitchen as well, so we could save some money by eating in for most breakfasts and lunches. It is basically right next door to the Hale Koa. My recollection was that it was not cheap (my wife made the reservation and paid the bill), something like $750/night. This year we are staying out of Waikiki at the Ko Olina Beach Villas for about $200/night less.

I don't think it was a 5 star suite if the normal rate was $250-300.

What was the exact details of your 4 day deal? That sounds like a time share offer.

LOL @ Vegas being "exotic."

I've only been once, but the Hilton Hawaiian Village was nice. Personally I wouldn't get too worked up about staying at a fancy hotel; it is Hawaii and you shouldn't spend much time in your hotel.

No time share, just a standard deal from Travelocity.

It was off season (we went a week prior to Valentine's), and Mexico was dirt cheap for some reason that year (2010).

$450pp was before tax of course. It was about $600~ after, which is still disgusting for 4-night all-inclusive (including drinks) with RT air.
