Now that's I'm employed again, I'm looking for a good web hosting service where I can have my own domain again.

What I am interested in is PHP/mysql/ftp/ssh/sub-domains (the usual deal) support as well as (this is crucial) PHP safe mode being turned off.

Would anyone happen to know of a good service they could recommend to me?

well, if you just want to try something out and get used to it:

1and1.com 🙂 I've just used them to host some files so far and I get good speeds.
 
1and1.com is offering free 3-year service and a domain name for $6/yr. I'm using it now. It's really sweet--especially the whole free part 😛

Otherwise, powweb is pretty good.

that 1and1.com offer is sweet...but...I can't help but wonder if they'll oversell and hurt their reputation in the long run.

No kidding... 3 years is a looong time in Internet time.
 
1 and 1 has a really sweet deal going on for sure. The only problem with it as far as I can see is that it has a limit of 500 megs. Since I'm going to have an online gallery in there, I'm going to require more space.

I'll check if they have other deals...

as for powweb, looks really good, wish they could offer ssh though :/ I'll see if I can live without it.
