I am going to buy a new heatsink and need advice on what buy. The case it will be in
is an Antec 900. I have a Frys and MicroCenter near me and hopefully they will have
something appropriate in stock. I'm currently using a Zalmen CNPS7700 AICu
but it is summer and no air conditioning in my upstairs room. It stays pretty warm
even at night. Idle core temps as I'm typing this avereage 52c with a CPU temp of 45c according to RealTemp and
Speedfan. That may seem high but it is 80f in my room with no air flow.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

This belongs in cases and cooling. I will move it for you.

That should be fine for a quad core. If you feel like there's any instability or slowdowns, then a tower cooler would be recommended.

Either place. The 7700 I'm using is less than a 1 / 4 copper. Not even a copper
base. I have an Orb 2 that has a pure copper base and aluminum fins I may try first.
I have used a CP9500 before and could get the 9700 but those are very loud compared
to other heatsinks, but they cool extremely well. I had a Q6600 before and with the
7700 it idled at 45c @2.8. The 9450 is a 45nm and is supposed to run cooler than
the 65nm dual cores like the 6600. I'm not lacking case air flow be any means.
What software do you used to monitor temps ? I have used everything I can find.

I use either Everest or CPUID.
You might want to look at a Xigmatek (or other variations under different brand names) for a cooler if cost is an issue. Whether or not those B&M stores carry it is another thing. If not, just get one from a reputable dealer.

Otherwise, watercooling.

I would definitely not go for Zalman or Thermaltake on that but rather throw a Scythe, Thermalright (if you know how to lap), Arctic Cooling or Xigmatek/Kingwin/OCZ cooler on there.
