Good headphones for blocking out external noise, yet good quality music?

Unfortunately i have to do my homework in the same room as our tv that my fiancee likes to watch.... (1 bedroom apartments suck)

What headphones do you reccomend? I've thought about some white noise ones, but i find the white noise to be more distracting than the actual noise im attempting to block.

Not sure if the Grados really fall into that category since they are open air headphones and don't do the best job of sealing out external noises.

My desk is less than 2 feet from the TV, so no matter whats on, its pretty loud.

2nd the 71SL's. They work fine for me, and they block out noise. Only $30 from Amazon with free ship.

The problem with the Sony MDR - EX71SL's is that the default cord that comes with them is too short, forcing you to use the extension that comes with it, which makes the entire cord too damn long. (WTF was Sony thinking when they designed these??)

Go with the EX51LP's instead, as the default cord is much longer, thus you won't need the extension.

they give you that thing to wrap the cord around to make it shorter, it works fine

You wouldn't have to do that if they made a proper cord length to begin with, besides, the extra weight of the cord is a pain in the a$$. I returned my 71SL's and got the 51LP's and I'm happy as a clam.

I've tried out the Bose QuietComfort 2 (noise cancelling) and the white noise is barely audible at all.
