Hi,

I am going to NYC in April and I am staying at HI NY (aka american youth hostels ny), staying there for three nights.
Adress: 891 Amsterdam Ave, New York NY 10025

I'd like you guys to recommend me the best hardware stores
I am looking for:

-Cool and professional sfaff;
-Test the product there by gaming or benchmark or dignostic; (most important)
-Good prices and not too far away from where I am staying.

I heard that CompUsa (aka TigerDirect) and Microcenter are very good.

I intend to buy a laptop, a VGA, a smartphone, mouse and headphone perhaps and flash drive.

Any help would be highly appreciated,

Thank you.

Go to B&H to try out some of the things you want. The staff there is generally knowledgeable and friendly.

Where are you from that you can't find this stuff locally or online?

There's no CompUSA or Micro Center in NYC. Go to Best Buy or B&H Photo.

OP is coming to NYC in April and the Brooklyn and Queens Micro Center locations should be open next month.

If you prefer to stay in Manhattan B&H is your best bet but they don't have everything out on display as Micro Center does.

I used to live in that neighborhood. Nothing really close as far as computer hardware, only thing I can think of is PC richards and sons, but those are more downtown. No idea what they're like, never been inside one, but I presume it's more like best buy than anything.

I've walked by that hostel a bunch of times, be careful at night.

How late do you mean?

Anything between 10pm-6am. You'll probably be fine, and if you have friends with you, even better, but there's a lot of shady drug dealers in that area. I wouldn't go any further east late at night. Anywhere from 100-110th street between amsterdam and columbus is the worst area of that neighborhood. Central park west is pretty nice, and anything west of broadway is very nice. I lived on 109th between broadway and amsterdam. There are some sketchy characters, but most of the drama happens between amsterdam and columbus. North of 110th all the way to 120th is very nice (dominated by Columbia University). Go check out the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on 112th and amsterdam, it's pretty impressive (at least from the front) unless you're from europe and bored with cathedrals.

South of 100th st, it should be pretty nice all over. North of 120th, you probably don't want to go (and have no need to). Don't go east of morningside park at night. In fact, don't go into morningside park at night. Riverside park at night is fine, mostly just dog walkers.

I expected a lot more talk of hammers and, like, paintbrushes 'n' shit.
There's a tiny little mom and pop hardware store on 114th and broadway, and another on 108th or so, but not much in the way of selection.

As I mentioned previously for computer parts, good luck.

Heh... He should just go to the Apple store like most New Yorkers do. :)

But, yeah, I'd go to B&H.

The way you say scares me a little. I wouldn`t like to be stuck in a hostel so early 10-12p.m.

Makes me think if does really worth going to NY and not to another City in US.

I think it's totally worth it...in terms of places to visit, NYC has a lot to offer, and in terms of nightlife, NYC is great. You can get around without having to worry about driving, there's lots to see and do, and I think everyone should experience it. Boston is probably a close second (I think it's probably better in a lot of ways) but NYC should be seen at least once.

And like I said, you'll be fine...just be aware. I never had any trouble walking around the streets at night, just stick to what I said above to increase your odds.
