I have a Dell hard drive that is failing on me, and they are willing to replace the drive (they came over to my house and dropped off the exact same drive), but they are not willing to move the data over from the first HDD to the new one for me. Does anyone know any good programs that will make an exact copy of the first (Failing) hdd (its still functional atm but is claiming it has errors, etc., and needs to be replaced) and clone it onto the second one so I can just remove the first one and plug in the second one and it will all work like nothing ever happened?

Freeware preferred, although I have a very limited amount of time here before Dell demands I send them a drive back so non-freeware is okay too.

Thanks.

don't buy powerquest, but Symantec/Ghost bought them anyway, so i think your choices are very limited

Haven't used any recently, but back in the windows 3.1 and dos 6 days, Norton Ghost was king.

Norton Ghost 2003 works great for single users, we use Ghost Corp edition 8 at my work and it's wonderful. No problems at all.

V2i Protector by Symantec (was originally powerquest). Get the trial and see the difference. Ghost makes you reboot. V2i does not. You can do a base inage, and then daily or weekly incremental images. Writes directly to a DVD-+/R/RW as well as network shares. You can image from the console on a server or from your PC. We use it here on or LAN instead of Ghost. We did use Ghost Enterprise, but ditched it as soon as V2i Protector came out. WAY worth the money in comparison to Ghost. Plus the server version, just like the workstation version, does hot backups while the server is still up. We have live Oracle DB's doing transaction processing while backing up to image at the same time.
