I'm almost finished building a new system for gaming and digital audio stuff and I'm trying to decide on a video card. I am forced into 1280x1024 native for my lcd and the components of the new system are:

x2 3800 @ 2.5Ghz
2 Gb OCZ platinum 2-3-2-5 1T
DFI ultra-D

What would be a good card to pair with this system that will still be able to run games in at least medium settings at ~1280x1024 for the next few (1.5 - 3) years ?

I can afford almost anything but I don't want to overspend, and I would like something that will justify getting this whole new system for. My older system has a Geforce ti4400. Right now I'm seriously considering x1800xt or possibly x1900xt because the price isn't extremely exorbitant. I'm concerned, however, that this may be too much and I may be better off with just an overclocked 7800 gt. The games I play/plan on playing are: Far Cry, Fear, Morrowind oblivion, quake 4, call of duty 2.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Don't let your video card slow you down. You've got a setup that will take games for probably 2 years plus. Since you don't want to upgrade your video card for a year or so, get the best you can afford (which, by your post, looks like the 1900xt).

Do it right the first time. I've found out the hard way that trying too hard to save money will just give you a system that you're okay with, but KNOW that for a few hundred extra bucks you'd be much happier.

EDIT: and BTW, if you're planning on running FEAR at 12x10, you're gonna need it.
