GOOD GAWD! Windows XP Runs SETI Damn FAST

I just got my WinXP CD yesterday and can say I've been happily running SETI in WinXP for over 12 hours faster and more smoothly than I was in Win98SE (WinME too).

My initial impression is that WinXP simply runs SETI better than any other OS (haven't tried 2k yet though).

What are your thoughts?

EDIT: Sorry I haven't been racking in the WU's the last couple weeks, vacation and computer problems cropped up.

I just installed XP this weekend on one of my systems too. SETI doesn't run any faster or slower on my system in XP than it did in 98SE. Maybe there was another factor you haven't thought of?

Really? That's interesting. Maybe it's just because I ran SETI a lot more on WinME than I did on 98SE before I made the switch to XP.

One thing's for sure though, I don't get any slowdowns in XP and everything is much smoother. Couldn't be happier. :)

Ongoing test results:

120 WU's compared
XP Pro compared to W98 FE--same hardware/bios settings/tweaked out/minimal overhead.

Results:

XP Pro is 16.853% faster than W98 on my system.

Will be doing W2K tests soon :)

I would guess that WinXP does the same as Win2k when it comes to those difficult angle WU's....the ones that Win98 doesn't handle too well. Over time, I would imagine a 16% increase (over all WU's) is well atainable! :)

So far I'm very impressed with XP over 98SE too. I still have one machine on 98SE and another on ME. Eventually, they'll all be XP.

Which XP though? Pro or Home? It would make a bit of a difference, with Pro doing better (similar to 2K().

NT/2000/XP will definetely run SETI a little faster due to the way they handle the low angle WU's. It should not account for a 12 hour difference. Perhaps your 98/ME setup had a few bugs?

No, you are not correct there. WinXP Home is a boiled down version of WinXP Pro with SMP support and a few networking and security things cut out. The kernel of WinXP Home = the kernel of WinXP Pro. Application performance under each OS version on the same non-SMP rig would be identical.

I know I'm running wus 4 an average of 3 hours faster on my XP pro machine then I did in Win98se. That may be because I traded the old 700e@980 in for a 1.33@1.5 T-bird and then installed XP, though. :)
