I have a Pentium D 805 @3.6ghz, what I plan to do with this machine is game so I need the following upgrades:

8800GTS
2GB ram
Hiper 580w 2.2 PSU

should this be a good machine to game on or would it really bottleneck the 8800?

I installed everything, e6400 running at 2.6ghz on stock volts just fine with big typhoon, I bought the 640 card and damn is this thing fast. I will try some more overclocking but its fast as it is right now.

Sounds like to me it would be fine to game on. What resolution do you plan on playing at ?

Well you are good to go then...Just make sure that your PSU is strong enough for the 8800....:)

You be fine with that one...38A overall.

Pro: Modular cabling.
Con: Doesn't have Active PFC.

With that CPU and native resolution I'd get the 320MB GTS instead of the 640MB. If you were planning to upgrade your CPU and/or monitor in the not too distant future stick with the 640MB.

I've always heard that it is good to have. From what I understand, it provides "clean" power. Less fluctuation, more steady power and also better efficiency. I not 100% on all that though. Maybe someone can clarify.

If I were you I would upgrade to the C2D a.s.a.p. to take advantage of that 8800 card. The C2D is that much faster. ;)

At resolutions like 12x10 all CPU's are well above "playable" >60FPS in every test so CPU comparison is mute with a GTS. If you have a Celeron you'd be fine too.

active pfc, the non modular thing I can deal with.

That one looks good....36A is enough for your card so no worries there.
Active PFC and look at the efficiency..... > 95% at full load!!!!!
As for not having a modular PSU...Just get some tie straps an do a little tidying up inside the case, making sure no wires are near any fans and also just neat looking and you're all set. That's what I do.

I'm willing to be a year's salary that thing isn't anywhere near 95% efficient at part or full load.

First off, Hiper over Coolmax anyday. Coolmax is junk.

Hiper on the other hand is a good power supply that provides the 580W just fine. However with no Active PFC it tends to be fairly low efficiency. Overall id recommend, Silverstone (EF series), Seasonic, or Enermax. Any of their 80plus stuff is good.

Not sure exactly what you're asking with this question but if you mean how will your PSU choice affect your oc than I'd say make sure you get a good quality one if overclocking. Like Wreckage pointed out, you don't need a super powerful PSU, but you should avoid the dumpy ones.

Just to give you an idea of power requirements, I measured 394W at the wallplate or ~295W draw from the components with the following parts:

E6600@3.6GHz 1.42V
8800GTX@stock
X-Fi Fatality
320GB Seagate sata drive
2GB Patriot PC5300
3- 120mmx38mm Sanyo Denki Fans
2- 80mm Thermaltake Smart Case II fans
600W Enhance PSU
50Z waterpump (only 8W draw)

394w from the wall?

Werent you pulling almost 600w from the wall with your Crossfire rig? That's a pretty big step down in power requirements.

I was a little surprised as well. With the X1900XTs at 710/840 1.525/1.15/1.15/1.5V
I was pulling 587W from the wall or ~440W from my components. To be fair I was running the 8800GTX at default, but it's still surprising.

Tech Report does a good job of recording system power draw.

theres a couple of things weird in that setup lol
8800gts for 1280x1024 WAY overkill... you'll notice approx 0% increase in performance over a 7800gtx or a 7900gt(x)
hiper psu = whack

If you can spare a little extra dough than I would go with one of these:

Silverstone ST56ZF $107.99 + ship

Corsair HX520W $89.99 shipped w/ Google Checkout or $96.00 AR shipped

XS should probably update that list as Hiper 580W (and above) PSU's are essentially rebadged Andyson Server PSU's with modular cables. The 730W/800W variants are in their High Efficiency (~84%).

OP, that Hiper Type-R 580W PSU would get 75%+ efficiency & be extremely reliable. It's more than capable of running a Pentium 805 & Crossfire/SLI.

The specs you listed for the PC should be just fine for gaming.
