Good gaming LCD (oxymoron)

Hi there,

I've read a bunch of reviews and haven't seen too much recently for 19" monitors. The LCD market seems to make changes pretty quickly. Anyway, I'm looking to get an LCD monitor. I need a second one and my desk is tiny. :) I do play games (currently HL2 and WoW, sometimes RoN, UT2004, Starcraft...) almost daily, so that's important to me -- probably most important for this monitor. I also program and use Linux/Unix shells often, so 2D/text is somewhat important, and I do web graphics work occasionally (least important). I want a 19" monitor because I usually run games at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (depending on what the game supports) and my desktop at the same. I've thought about a 20" monitor but I thikn 1600x1200 would be too small for me...sometimes 1280x1024 is pretty small, but that's half font size I suppose.

Currently I've been looking at the Dell 1905FP since I can get a good deal through work ($499), but I don't really know many other good LCDs in the 19" range currently on the market. I seem to remember mention of the Samsung SyncMaster 193X or something...anyway I'm sure others here have more information or experience than I do, or know of some non-Anand/Tom's reviews I could read.

One other question I have is, regarding a 20" like the 2001FP ($599) @ 1600x1200, would increasing font size make the font look strange? I'm pretty sure 1600 would be too high for me to comfortably work for very long, so increasing font size would be the option. I don't want ot change to 800x600. :)

Thanks for any advice.

I've heard good things about the ViewSonic VP912b. 12ms response time.

Downside is that it's close to $600.

at first it will be seem tiny but after 2 weeks you will be so used to it you wonder how you lived without it being that high.

the viewsonic is a 6bit colour screen is it not?

recently got a 1905FP to go with a pre-built gaming rig, excellent, no ghosting noted, great contrast, rich colour saturation.

I have vp912b. GREAT monitor. You can find it for about $550 online.

I play a lot of battlefield veitnam, doom3, halo2. Only drawback it that things do not look so good unless you stay in native resolution (but that is most lcd's).

Thanks for the responses. I'm currently considering the ViewSonic VP912B ($570), Dell 2001FP ($600) and 1905FP ($500), and Samsung 193P ($720). Tough decision. :)

I throw in for sony SDM-HS94P (it uses the same panel as the VS VP912B) cost me $599 AR at Best Lie but well worth it. Only a 6-bit screen, but I really don't notice tit though to tell you the truth and I do mild to moderate photo editiing.

I have thePHILIPS 190S5FB. It looks great, 12ms responce time, perfect for my little desk. I play HL2, CS:S, D3, Farcry, and the colors look great with no ghosting at all. It was less than 500 shipped.

The thing that would trouble me about the Philips 190S5FB would be the adage "you get what you pay for". The primary reason (I suspect) that the Philips is cheaper then the Viewsonic is that the Philps 190S5FB completely lacks any DVI inputs (analog only), which makes you wonder how much better the monitor would have been with a DVI connector.

The Viewsonic VP912B on the other hand is going for about $550 and DOES have that DVI connector, which in the long run, you may be very happy you have over not having it on the Philips.

If you're looking to save money, probably try the Sceptre X9g-Gamer as it is a 12ms 19" LCD with DVI connects and actually costs LESS then the DVI-less Philips.

The Dell 1905FP is not that good for gamming. I bought one just before Christmas and was a little disappointed with the ghosting. I paid $466 shipped w/tax though so it not like I paid $700 or something - if so, I'd be really disappointed.

I have been doing a lot of research on 19 inch monitors and ordered a viewsonic vp912b. For those also interested in the vp912b, there are a few reports/posts that say that the latest builds (November on) have a traditional matte LCD panel, not the glass screen that it used to have (the one that is like the sony hs94). Not sure what y'all will get if you order one (or what I will get), and I'm also not sure if viewsonic changed panels or if AUO has just changed it. If anyone has more info, please post.

You'll be getting the matte panel, not glass.

Viewsonic has been shipping matte panels to its distributors for the past month or more, so unless who you ordered from was sitting on rather old-stock, you should definately be getting a matte panel... certainly all shipments of VP912Bs from Viewsonic lately have been matte, not glass.

I've been seriously considering this monitor myself, my only/main concern being how it will look in non-native resolutions. I wish I had one nearby that I could test in low-res.
