Boy, you're going to get a load of answers to that question.

It's really going to depend on what type of game you prefer (Strategy, RPG, Action, etc.).

I'm going to say Crysis. It's what I've been playing the most of, anyway.

Well I really can't pin down the "best" game... but I can tell you what recent games I have put a significant amount of time into: TF2, CoD4, Medieval II Total War: Kingdoms, and The Witcher.

I just got an 8800 GT for the holidays so pretty soon Crysis will be on that list too.

That's a really broad question. Taken from the perspective of which games I logged the most hours on, it'd be these:

1) UT99 + mods
2) Morrowind/Bloodmoon/Tribunal
3) BF2
4) BG2:SOA
5) Civ 2

For the record, I would say Freespace 2, followed closely by Deus Ex.

I assume we're talking fairly current games?

The Witcher
Medieval 2 Total War:Kingdoms
Command and Conquer 3
Supreme Commander
Neverwinter Nights 2 and Mask of the Betrayer

I cannot rate any FPS as great anymore, they've been about the same since Quake. You could make the same argument about RPGs and RTSs, but at least in a good RPG or RTS you have a good story to go with the rest of the game. FPSs these days are all flash and no substance. CoD4, Crysis, ETQW, BF2142, Halo 3, etc, nothing but more of the same.

COD4 is currently completely holding my attention. Bioshock held it for about 2 days then got boring and repetitive. Witcher is also on my play list as is Assassins Creed (360). But for now its COD4 all the way.

I'll just say my personal favorite, which is Quake 3. Not the most nostalgic, but the game I spent the most time in having fun. :)

My favorites:

Pre-1990's: Bane of the Cosmic Forge

1990-1995: System Shock

1996-2000: Half-Life, by far

2001-2005: Far Cry

2006-Present: The Witcher

Mechwarrior 2 (with ms sidewinder joystick)
MVP Baseball 2005 (the longevity of this game with mods astounds me)
Half-life / CS:1.3 - Source

-- Team fortress 2 almost made the list but not in its current state. After some more updates from valve then possibly.

Sadly, as weak as this troll is, you'll get all the response you could hope for. AT doesn't need bait - they go for the bare hook.

StarCraft
CS:Source

Those two are always installed on my machine.

Recently I've played through the following:

Gears of War- Excellent tactical and innovative shooter. Story is pretty bleh, but the battles are pretty fun. Especially the last boss. Pain in the but difficult, but very enjoyable final boss experience. Can't get into the MP as there is barely anyone online on the PC version.

Call of Duty 4 - Great cinematic quality story line. Excellent gameplay variety. From stealth missions to air support missions, it's got it all. Only problem is endless spawning enemies instead of clever ones that will maneuver and give you an actual challenge. MP is great, but I just can't get enough of the hectic run n gun gameplay of CS:Source.

Bioshock - It kind of combines the tactical gameplay of Gears with the Cinema quality story of COD4. Next to Metroid Prime 3, this is my favorite game of the year.

Crysis - Demo ran like crap on my machine, so I can't be bothered with it. Maybe after my next upgrade, I'll give it a run. Hopefully, it will come bundled with my next video card purchase.
