Good games that werent popular

I loved Recoil, but it was the only video game ever that gave me motion sickness when I played it. It was the right balance of simplicity and action.

The Battlezone games were exceptional. It's a pity that their hybrid FPS/RTS gameplay style never really caught on in subsequent games. I replayed BZ2 for the fifth or sixth time last year. Need to find my BZ1 CD and load that up too at some point.

Another one I can think of is Ballistics, an arcade style racer from 2001. The main thing that made it a lot of fun was the amazing sensation of speed, making it by far the fastest racing gaming I've played. A lot of the gameplay just came down to memorizing the track layouts, but hurtling through the tracks at 3000mph (and it actually felt like you were going that fast) gave it a great fun factor.

Any flight sim or flight combat sim other than Microsoft's. Especially the Jane's flight sims.

Grand Prix Legends?

Great game and the crazy thing is there are still a bunch of multiplayer servers up and running with mods and custom maps, etc... Last time I checked anyway, which was a couple months ago.

I swear there are more Deus Ex servers than there are Q4 servers 😕

I think Deus Ex was pretty well known (as it deserved to be, of course). Most people on the forums I frequent have played it at some point.

I don't think I ever tried out the multiplayer despite playing through the singleplayer part 12 or 13 times. Another thing on my list of games to be played. 😛

Freespace 1&2
Revolt
Plane Crazy
Lords of Magic
Requiem
System Shock 2 - meh, maybe not, it was kinda popular i suppose
Aliens Vs Predator 1&2 - best straight up deathmatch eva!

Sacrifice

I can't think of a game that exude so much quality and ingenuity, but almost completely goes unnoticed by the gaming public. Every reviewer I've seen have given it deep praises. It infuses the two very popular genre, RTS and FPS and blends in humor, fantasy, and wizardry. The graphics and sound are outstanding. Replayability is also excellent, offering you different paths each time you play (which determines your spell library). Just like it's predecessor MDK, the gameworld, while often bizarre, is huge. Even the end credit is notable. Having played through the entire game many times over, I can tell the developers poured their heart & soul into it. You can't step back and not think that this is one polished beautiful piece of work.

The Battlezone series (BZ1/BZII) still ranks up IMHO as one of the best, under-rated games of all time. I've been playing computer games for 25 years and Battlezone still holds a high mark for me. BZ was so far ahead of its time in when it came out (graphics, originality - too bad FPS/RPG never caught on).

Recoil and Shogo were fun too. You know what's wild, playing Battlezone II on a modern day graphics card.

I'll second Mafia and Citizen Kabuto, both already mentioned. Mafia is still the best "sandbox action" game to date. Very intense at times. I still remember coming to these forums and reading a thread about people not being able to pass the first race at the track because they were using a keyboard. You'll need a gamepad for at least that part. I'll definitely be replaying that one soon. The Mechs part of Kabuto was just great. The graphics at the time were way ahead of their time and it was a very funny game also. Unfortuantely, you can easily tell that the devs spent the majority of their time on the mechs scenario. I'd like to see a sequel focusing exclusively on the mechs.

It was probably ridiculously popular, but I used to play Daggerfall from a PC Gamer disc I got. The number of hours I spent playing that little demo... x_x lol

Another game that comes to mind would be TRON 2.0, if your as old as me remembering seeing this flick in the theatres, the game is quite stellar and cool easy graphics. Check it out.

Try out:

UFO Aftershock: It is a squad based game.. It can be real time or turn based. A lot of fun. (Xcom'ish)

The Indigo Prophecy: Adventure game played by multiple characters. Very engrossing.

Oh man I loved this game! I used to play it all the time. I wish I still had a copy of it 🙁

The Freespace series is the first thing that comes to my mind.

Panzer General and Combat Mission Berlin to Barbarossa spring to mind as two that have not been mentioned yet.

I think Panzer General was very popular......about 15 years ago. It spun off Fantasy General (one of the very coolest games of all time), Panzer General 2 (meh) and some other 'General' I can't remember.

The other one was "Star General" and doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the other two.

Black&White2 is a real Gem!
even the expansion Pack is OK . . . if you don't quickload AND play it thru a 2ndtime.

the humour is very similar to Giants:CK - BUT with an "anytime" save. 😉
Do you smoke crack?

No . . . do you sniff glue?

i didn't see any of your comments in my B&W2 thread. 😛

B&W2 is an excellent game . . . evidently ALL the complaints were on the original UNPATCHED game. 😉
