FPS'ers are out. Racing is in or something thats not hard to play and is appropriate for his age? He doesn't seem to be into the learning games much. Any easy Flight games maybe?

My 8 year old daughter is really into racing games & her favorite so far is Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2... its pretty fast & is best played with a joystick, but will run ok @ lower resolutions on her Athlon XP 2100+ w/Radeon 9600XT... she also enjoys the older NFS games too but this one is her favorite, avoid anything newer in the seris though unless your kid has a 6600GT/9800 Pro or faster video card.

Edit: Almost forgot... NFS is her favorite driving game & she plays it a lot, but her all-time favorite game so far is Disney Toontown online, a MMOG for kids that is heavily moderated and very safe, albeit expensive at $10 a month .. the software can be downloaded for free & theres a 3-day trial so he can see if he likes it before you drop any cash... also the hardware requirements for this one are very modest, a high-end Pentium 3 & DX7 video card will do fine.

Sims! You just gotta love'em! Good way to learn about life!

If you have a 360, I'd recommend Viva Pinata...well uhh...sorta.

My 8 year old is hooked on Guild Wars, he's a level 19 now...

Also likes Tetris, the I Spy games from Scholastic, Star Wars Rogue Squadron, Adventure Pinball, Myst, Civ III, NFS Hot Pursuit, and Morrowind.

Car is actually a pretty decent game... good for a 8 year old. See you can either train your kid to play RPGs , FPS & RTS. But then your kid will sort of become addicted to games. My friend's son did play World of Warcraft but that game i don't recommend your son playing. Viva Pinata if you have an xbox 360. Classic Platformers i highly recommend.

I'll check some of these games out. He likes shooters as I have let him played some but I tend to keep him off of them for now anyway. Thx

When I was young I liked simcity. Just because I could build my own metropolis then annihilate it with fires, tornadoes, etc... There's a couple board game on the PC that were good. I remember getting yahtzee in a cereal box and it was a fantastic computer game, especially for free.

Morrowind was his favorite before Guild Wars...Civ III was on regular rotation until about a year ago...now it's a once-a-month thing. I thought that the lessons in CIV III would be good ones for a young, active mind; resource allocation, decisions that have immediate and long-term consequences, strategy etc...

He never conquered the world or beat all of the civilisations, but he enjoyed the game and learned lessons, for sure.

Morrowind, though, he could play for hours. That time would be a mix of goal-oriented gameplay and simply wandering around the world, interacting and instigating.

My 7 year old likes FATE and Bionicle's Heroes which I wouldn't classify as an FPS.
