Hi,

I'm looking for a good and free php editor. Just something simple that does syntax highlighting. I use Nedit on my linux box but this is for Windows.

any recommendations?

Thanks

Sorry, that used to be free. They still have a personal edition free but it looks like it's gimped and also the EULA states: The personal edition gives you right to create works solely for your own PERSONAL USE ONLY. You may NOT use it or works created with it for any commercial, business, governmental or institutional purpose of any kind.

BTW, I still have the older beta version on my hard drive and that was free. I remember I liked it a lot when I was evaluating which PHP IDE I wanted to use about a year ago. I ended up going with Dreamweaver but the top IDEs I liked were DW, PhpED, WeBuilder and PHP Designer.

If you want me to send you the installer, PM me an e-mail address to send it to. It's less than a couple of megs.

well I just came across notepad++. It seems pretty good and actively developed.

I'll use it unless any one can show my something better.

Do you use that a lot? I looked at several Java based IDEs back when I was evaluating and they were all a little sluggish. There were a couple of pretty good ones (the names escape me now) but I could never get past that little bit of sluggishness they all seemed to have.

i've heard good things about pspad, but have never tried it

i tried eclipse today
it does well for syntax display and stuff, but its seriously bloated
it also doesn't auto close tags, which is a major bummer for me

i hear they're making a php plugin for aptana, that should be good if it keeps the aptana style of coding

i've been using zend for a couple years, but its not free

It's a free editor like most others, but the plugins makes it shine, and they're easy to install.
It's Java, but I've never found it sluggish unlike most Java apps I've used, but this does bring the nice benefit of being able to use it on many other OS's as well.

I prefer vi or vim in Unix just because that's what I'm used to, however, when it comes to stuff on Windows, TextPad is my personal choice.

JEDIT is da bomb! It has lots of cool plugins (free and downloadable from inside the app). I have a diff plugin, PHP error checking plugin, and some others. THe PHP syntax highlighting is built-in. Another thing is that it is GREAT for editing code. It is very flexible with how it allows you to select text and insert text, and has some great little functions. I highly recommend it!

A similar question was asked not too long ago and someone mentioned PSPad so I checked that out. It's pretty good, has all the features I would need.
