I like fusetalk, but i need something cheaper. Is there anything out there that is freeware or cheap that will close to as good as this forum software that anandtech uses?

I prefer coldfusion

ditch coldfusion. it's as slow as a grandma, which is why you can't find hosting for less than $1zillion/mo. nobody wants to waste expensive CPU cycles on a bloated crusty program.

learn php. it does more than cf, is lightning-fast (and every host supports it), and it's almost as simple to learn/understand as cf

i disagree about Coldfusion. PHP is cheaper, but doesn't necessarilly perform better.

There are a lot of hosts that do coldfusion. I'm not worried about that.

This forum is in cfm.

lol not worried about what?
that you can't possibly find a *cheap* and good host for cf
and
that it never ever performs faster than php

oh to answer your question....

use phpbb. it's free, open source and is a lot like fusetalk by default and has thousands of plugins for it. be warned though that a lot of things about the user interface/ intuitaveness are crappy by default. I spent a few weeks massively modifying the source and now I have a bb that's 20 times better than fusetalk in every way and it's free (including free hosting, since it uses zippy php)

you must register to view anything on it as the content is pretty secret. I only give registration to people I meet in person and get a signature from. sorry

but I can send you the php if you want and you can try it out yourself

CF and PHP are comparable in speed, except CF is MUCH easier to learn than PHP. The syntax look nothing alike as one is tag-based.

The only advantages PHP has over CF is its price and availability, not performance. (Speed certainly isn't why hosts charge a lot for it - it's because CF server costs $1200+ to purchase)

I've been in search of cheap CF hosts for a couple years on and off and the only one I've come across with value was readyhosting.com at $99/yr... but I wouldn't recommend them unless you're just looking to play around. Business sites that require strong uptime should go elsewhere and expect to pay at least $25/mo. for CF hosting.

If you know PHP already, that's a better option at this point. CF has become stale - quite a shame really.
