heres my situation...i want to create a raid0 array in my new rig, and i'm just adding a new hdd along with the one already in there. so, i'm going to backup the existing hdd onto an old IDE i have, create the raid array, then copy the image back onto the raid array, or thats my plan anyway....

anyone know of a free hdd imager that would work well doing this?

Free is a catch-22 there.

Knoppix boot CD and dd or ditto might do it, if you're comfortable with that side of things.

Better idea - Don't create a RAID0, as the benefits in a desktop/workstation are pretty much worthless. :p

... may as well put all your data at a much higher risk at once? :p

If you're not running a server, you don't need RAID 0. :)

Give it to me!

But if you're feeling greedy and don't want to give it to me there are other options such as just using it as extra storage or setting up a RAID 1 array.

yeah i thought about raid1, but i gave up on them all and its just in there as storage now. i don't know if anyone saw some of my earlier threads about this hard drive (the old one) being defective, but i think i have confirmed it now. The hdd seemed to keep randomly shutting down, and i originally thought it was lack of sufficient power, but its still happening now on a Fortron 530w. So.....i think i'm going to image the old hdd over to the new one (even thought they are technically identical drives) and try and narrow my problem down some. if that DOESN'T solve it, i'll through something through a window.

anyway, back to the point of the thread...i need a good hard drive imager. i want to be able to just make an exact copy, OS and all, from the old WD 80gb to the new WD 80gb, both SATA. i'd prefer something with a windows GUI, if possible. I've tried a few, Acronis True Image, Image for windows...they both seem to be hell bent on "backups" and that is NOT what i want to do. i want to be able to image over to the new drive, and boot off it 10 seconds later. (or mabye 30 seconds...)Acronis does have a "Drive Clone" function, but for some reason or another, it doesn';t seem to work.
