Good for SETI, bad for me.

Hello all,

I have some good news for the SETI team. My dad is ordering 5 new P4 2.0Ghz Dells tonight for his business, which will probably run SETI 24/7. I'm a little bummed out because I didn't get the contract to build them. I've been quoting the systems to him for over 2 years, constantly updating the configs and prices. Yes, my dad is a slow decision maker:p Anyway, we were all ready to order the systems last night. I was happy because I'd get to build 5 new systems for him. Dad makes some comment about wondering if Dell is cheaper. I had just built almost the same system for someone else a month ago, so I was sure that I'd be cheaper. So I take him to Dell's site. There, he remembers that he has 15% off at Dell Small Biz. Not looking good for me anymore. Then I find there's a $100 MIR on each of the Dell systems. All in all, they are about $1300 cheaper than my configs. Bottom line: My dad has 5 new Dells instead of 5 new custom built machines. As a side note: without the rebates, I blew the Dell systems out of the water in both performace and price:)

Anyway, the TeAm will soon have 5 new P4s with 512K cache. I suppose that's good, even though Intel and Dell are representatives of the devil.

Thanks for listening to my rant/brag/whatever.

Looking for the silver lining in this story ... you will have nothing to worry about when those machines break down. :p :)

That's true. I hate to be sexist, but his brance office in Storm Lake (that the computers are for) is run by all women. Supporting them (as I have been) has not been all that fun:p

Out of curiosity, what were you proposing to build for him? I'm really fond of these :D So far they're very well-behaved and I may just build more of the same, perhaps with 2400+'s, for next fiscal year. A few of my heavy users may get Maxtor Atlas 10K IV's too, if I can weasel the budget for it :D

When they start to scrwe up and he asks for help, you can now tell him "Dude, you gotta call dell!" Then hang out with him for the endless tech support call that resolves nothing!

On a side note, wher are your prices from. I see a couple nice deals there.

MoFunk: Prices are mostly from Newegg. Keyboard, mouse, monitor, UPS and a few other things are from Provantage. The software is from Mwave along with speakers and floppy drive.

MechBgon: The link to my quoted configuration is in my first post;)

Dasm! :p And Dell came out cheaper even with the UPS included? Do they let you have multiple rebates per biz too?

My Crucial PC2100 will do 2-2-2-6 at 166MHz, maybe higher (in my A7V333-RAID)... but I had minor problems with my A7N266-VM when running CL2.0, which may have been addressed with one of the recent BIOS updates. But considering the role of this board, I'm sticking with 2.5 in the business setting where those systems live :D Now my own office system, which uses an EPoX 8RDA+... well, that's another story :D

Ah ,office rigs ,fair point then.

Your RAM does CAS2-2-2-6 at 166MHz!:Q,damn I'm jealous! ,you have a latter version of my mbrd ,mine being the Asus A7V 266-E.
Am I right in saying the A7V 333 doesn't have RAM voltage adjustment?

(me scootes off to see if RAM goes higher;))

Hey Mech I see your Epox rig uses PC2700 ,maybe you can answer a question of mine in this thread?

The A7V333's* do have RAM voltage adjustments, although they're not documented. If you find the A7V333's interesting at all, here is the full scoop on 'em, my post is the second and includes a link to the RAM-voltage adjustment jumpers: mass quantities of A7V333 info here! :D

*this means the original A7V333 and A7V333-RAID, I'm not sure what changes were made to the A7V333-X family beyond the different southbridge used.

I will go have a look at your thread right now :D

Interesting ,I see they are in the same place as the RAM jumpers for the A7V 266-E but have an even higher def voltage!:Q
Btw mine BSOD at 157MHz!

Thanks for the info mate:)

Just fired off an email to a mate who has a small buisness building PC's ,some have the A7V 333.

I know I tried the next step up from 2.65v in my mbrd for the RAM & it made it less stable ,I wonder if I could get a higher FSB with 2.5v?
Loads of good info in that A7V 333 temp reading thread btw:)

I'd much rather support an office full of women than men. I guess it's the part about having someone attractive to look at instead of dudes. ;)

Congrats on the new additions to the fleet! :)

I was thinking along these lines as well.....but you can't always be sure about the attractive part;)

Well, I've got 3 of the P4s online now. The other 2 will come down to the office in our town (not the branch office), so they'll get setup later this week. WUs are averaging 3:44. The 3 at the branch office will run 24/7, but the 2 that come down here will only be running during the day:(

Just thought you'd want an update:)
