After using e sata for yrs (4-5 yrs),
I started using seagate ext.usb3 based drive.

The usage is far nice and very easy as no need to plug many cables .

I suggest you get just usb 3 based ext.enclosure .

I was dissappointed in the transfer speed of my USB 3.0 enclosure. It was transferring 75-90 MB/s with a 2TB 7200RPM Seagate in it. The same drive on internal SATA connection would peak at 190 and sustain in the 140s.

Compare that to me Toshiba Canvio 2TB 5900 (or is it 5400)RPM that will peak above 130MB/s and easily sustain about 110-120MB/s.

Same PC, same port. Maybe it's the chipset in the enclosure? Maybe a bad enclosure?

The problem I have with USB enclosures is very few are smart enough to spin the drive down when it's not in use and they tend to be hard on drives when you swap them out. I've lost a couple drives this way. Not to mention no RAID support.

A USB3/eSATA dock is no substitute for a decent gigabit ethernet NAS for backups.
