good DVD rom and DVD burner drives

In my 6 past years of beeing a computer geek, I have always had good luck with parts, meaning they tend to not die on me. This has been true except for my luck with DVD-ROM and now DVD-RW drives. I think it may have to do with the fact that I always pay bottom dollar for my drive, since I don't see any value added for paying more, and no clear way of telling if a drive is better.

Eventually, my ROM drives stop working or can't read CDs. My DVD burners hog the bus and lock up my 2CPU system, and have strange quirks and issues. My brands vary, Liteon, Samsung, Hitachi, and Sony.

Can anyone reccomend a very reliable drive, or am I just cursed in this area?

I'm happy with my Sony DRU-800A, I have that along with a Sony DVD-ROM OEM (model number escapes me but I got it from newegg for under $30). I owned a TDK VeloCD which worked well too.

Plextor was my other choice but the price for the SATA version was high and other then cable management there is no speed gain, some say NEC makes some good drives as well.

Might want to check the Hot Deals forum too. Nowdays you can get dual layer burners for under $60.00. The new NEC drive has been recommended alot around here.

Yeah man, even under $60 _CDN_

I'm in Canada and they're under 60 bucks.. The BenQ DW1640 is going for $51CDN

how do you guys like your plextor plextor 716sa dvd burners? can you boot from them? i've been thinking about getting one.,

BenQ DW1640.... just read reviews.

I love mine.

You should be able to boot from ANY optical drive..

Lite-On/Sony: Good, but tend to wear out quicker than some others.
NEC: Good.
Recent BenQs: Good.
...and all are cheap.

You don't have an old VIA south bridge, or a ICH4 (like any 845, and early 865 chipsets), do you?

I'm on my second NEC (gave the first one away; it didn't go bad). Highly recommend it. It is a dual layer burner, but I might never use it for that use if the media doesn't come down in price.

Whether or not you can boot from a SATA drive is up to the chipset. Nforce 4 has native SATA support, just like IDE. The newer Intel chipsets likely do, too.

Edit: I really dig my Plextor

I have a TSST (Toshiba/Samsung) H352-A DVD-ROM that I haven't had any problems with. I got it this past January to replace my Lite-On HD166S, which was also a good drive but failed after having it for about 1.5 years.

I had an LG CD-ROM that worked for two years without skipping a beat. I eventually sold it. I had an LG CD-RW that worked for about a year, then I sold it. Then I had another LG CD-RW that worked for over four years, I still have it and it's still working perfectly to this day. I've had an LG DVD-RW for about 5 months and I'm delighted with it. LG just seem to be quality drives and until I see things change drastically, I'll go with what I know in future.

Me too. My pioneer A09 rocks. I also still use my Sony dra-510a and its been in use for over two years. Heavy use BTW and never made a coaster. My sons comp has my old pioneer a04 and that baby still rocks.
