Good DVD player that can Upsample without HDMI

I need a recommendation for a player that won't break the bank that would be able to do this. I also need it to play dvd+r DL discs. Thanks!

Oppo 971 for $200 with free shipping at Amazon:

Edit: It's a great DVD player; I can tell you that much from personal experience. I just got rid of mine because I'm upgrading to a media center. Very awesome DVD player. DVDs were crystal clear on my projector. Very slim unit too and the DVD tray was made of some kind of nifty break-proof material (you could bend it without snapping).

The 971 only upsamples over HDMI as well as many of the DVD players out there. Very few upsample over component but Zenith 318, a couple of LG players to name a couple that do. Head over to AVSforum and check out this thread.

You say no HDMI, I would assume that means no DVI either, since that conversion can be done with a $5 cable. link to HDMI to DVI cable That Oppo only upconverts with DVI.

I have a Zenith DVB-318, which is really a rebadged LG DV7832. It can upconvert via component, and it has Faroudja DCDi scaling. It's probably discontinued, but you may be able to find one from Ebay.

edit: conehead beat me to it, re: Zenith dvb-318. haven't tried any dual layer discs though.

Yeah, what he said. You may only have DVI but a simple HDMI-DVI cable would work just fine.

OO IC. I don't have much knowledge about hdmi. I thought that it had to be an hdmi cable or else some protection thing won't work. (HDCP?). If I can easily use a hdmi to dvi cable than excellent!

I've got a Zenith DVB318 which upsamples to 1080i on component. Its got a few bugs but the picture is nice. Not sure if they make them anymore though.

Edit: Whoops got beat twice.

HDCP only applies to future HD content. An HDMI-DVI cable would be great for you.

Note that the oppo and similar players (panasonic S77 / S97) suffer from macroblocking when upconverting. You may get better results just running 480p from the player and letting your set do all the conversions. I got better results with 480p and letting my Panasonic AE900U do the dirty work compared to the 720p output of my S77.

I think mine does, I changed the settings to Component. Then again I could be wrong? I paid $70 at Sears about 6-months back.
