the pioneer dvd-115 and dvd116 drives are excellent drives for the cost. They run about 60-75 or so depending on where you get them. Try pricewatch.com

the pioneer and toshiba drives are both good, I bought a pioneer only because it has a slot load version, they also have a tray load version for a tad more.

The slot load version of Pioneer is sweet and very unique, I have an old one myself. I have been looking at the Toshiba because of its ability to read sub-channel data for using CloneCD. I understand however that it isn't very fast at DVD ripping (<5X I think) so if that is your interest, go with the Pioneer.

I just installed one 106s from pioneer. It's faster than the 105. Tried some cdspeed testing with it. No difference from pressed cd's and burned. Data goes from 16X-42X (70 minute cd). and audio 16X clv. No drops in speed either. Tried Some old cd'r I burned 2-3 years ago, and have been used alot as well.

It also seems quiter than the 105/115. I haven't tried Toshiba, but with the new pioneer drive, I think that's the best in the marked considering speed, and reability.

What exactly do you mean by ripping? Ripping cd's to make cd compilations with a burner or ripping a dvd?

If you're ripping DVD's, go with the Pioneer over the Toshiba. The 16X Toshiba supposedly has max rip speed of 2X.

Pioneer slot load is my choice also. And actually their tray load versions cost less, not more, but in the past the tray load versions either didn't have digital audio out connector or it was disabled. I don't know about the latest tray versions. I'm trying to wait for Pioneer to bring the 16x to SCSI, but if they don't hurry up, I'll have to settle for IDE :(... BTW, 16x acer dvds are pioneer design made under license--they also make both slot and tray versions.
