Good DVD Drive for GAMING

Bought Brothers in Arms PC game a few weeks ago, but just noticed its DVD only! Did a little checking and there are no plans to release it on CD. So.... I'm looking into a DVD rom drive to be used 99% for gaming only. I dont need a burner. Any suggestions in the $25-$30 range? I have seen the Toshiba 1912 and Lite-On SOHD-16P9S for this price, but I cant find any reviews for that are gaming specific. Any info is appreciated!

Asus E616P2 is the best out there. Its the only drive out there that supports full ATA100 transfer rates. Very quiet and fast and only $25. Highly recommend it.

Here is a DVDCDRW dual layer burner for only $45 This is just one example of how close the burners (not just dvd's but cdrw's as well) are to the regular DVD players at this point

Good point. In that case the NEC 3520A is arguably the best one out there.

Thanks for the replies!

michaelpatrick33 - I was thinking about getting a DVD/CDRW, but I already have a good CDRW and really dont have need for burning DVDs. I also noticed that the lower cost DVDRW tens to only read at 8x, not 16x. But good point on value if you need all the extras!

DVD drives can't even push ATA33, let alone ATA100.

Yeah, at this point in the optical drive game, your best bet is to pony up the extra 10 or 20 bucks and get a DVD burner, as that is where the technology is going into in the optical drive market. Plus, you have the added benefit of being able to burn dvds for backup of the system or to archive your games/movies if you so desire.

In transfer rates (burst) they can push a lot.

See for yourself

You just dont get any better.

doesn't really matter IMO. Just get whats cheap. I paid $35 shipped for a brand new Optirite(spelling) DVD burner off these forums. I've seen a Sony DVD burn go for as low as $25.

The hell is burst going to matter? the first two seconds will be faster and thats it...

show me SUSTAINED transfer rate and then we will talk.

and for DVD since generally you don't do much beyond install, or load it so you can click "play" I would probably look at price more than brand name.
