i need a dsl modem, the phone company offers one for $120 but its a tad out of my price range, and being just a single port dsl modem sounds a bit pricey anyway, didnt get the model number but its made by Vision or someone.

i figured i could get one for 50-75 bucks, but what are some companies that make decent ones for that price? and what are some companies to stay away from?

Lots of great choice out there now.

You can buy online or go to your local Microcenter.

If you could use an intel 2100 Pro DSL PCI DSL modem, I got one for $20 shipped.

To begin with, there is very little choice and low availability of DSL modems in the free market.

Some has USB interface some Ethernet and some both.

No matter what I would stay away from the USB only, or PCI. These two might restrict you from any serious Networking.

There is Combo DSL Modem Routers.

I will stay away from them too, since the Router component in these Gizmos is usually a ?Joke?.

That basically leaves you with the best choice. A plain Vanilla External Ethernet DSL Modem.

What is the Best? I have an answer for the Best Router.

Link to: The Best Routers.:D

The Best DSL Modem would the most inexpensive that you can find that is compatible with your ISP system.

Example: Model 5515 ETHERNET ADSL Bridge Modem. ($69).

definitely want external, didnt know if there were any name brands to shy away from. dont want a router in it, that zoom model jack linked looks good, may go with that...definitely something similar if not that one.

mostly i didnt want to get the cheapest one i could find, and have it die or something.

going to be using a wireless router with this, so i wanted a plain modem(external at that) . thanks jack, if anyone has any other suggestions feel free to post em, i wont be buying something til sunday or monday and would be glad to hear what anyone has to say

Verizon OnLine uses Westell modems for G.DMT, and everything I've ever read is that they actually are very good modems. They can be found used on EBay for peanuts (an auction is about to close on a C-90, $1 + $8 S/H = $9 total. If you really want cheap, that's cheap.). C-90 is the previous gen, 2100 / 2200 "dual connect" is the current gen that's a little better, avoid previous generations (B-90/A-90).

That all said, be very careful to get exactly what your carrier requires because DSL interoperability is a huge mess. For G.DMT, the Alcatel chipset (used in the Westells, and nearly everything as far as I can tell) does seem to work well.
