Good DS games?

So I'm flying halfway around the world solo and back, I'll have a few hours to kill to say the least. As well as books and sleeping pills, I've picked up one of these fancy nintendo DS Lite jobbies which seems pretty cool. I bought mariokart as it's a classic.
What else is good for the DS? I've not bought a console for about 6 or 7 years, so I'm quite out of the loop.

Also, can you upgrade the firmware on these things? If so... how? it's having trouble connecting to my router for some reason (it does work through my repeater - a linksys with linux firmware on it).

TIA

Advance Wars: Dual Strike is a great game for a plane ride, if you like turn-based strategy. If you would rather have action, then Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is a great one.

Never heard of a firmware update for a DS.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, if'n you can find it, is probably the best game for the DS. Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time caught me by surprise. After Castlevania, it ties New Super Mario Bros. for my second favorite DS title.

As much as I loved the SNES Mario Kart and Double Dash for the Cube (never played the GBA version, and didn't really like Mario Kart 64), I don't really like Mario Kart DS as much as I thought I would.

New Super Mario Bros (best game IMO) Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow comes in second.

Mario Kart is fun but get old after a little IMO.

Metroid controls are awful IMO.

My fiancee loves Brain Age, but I have no desire to even try and get into playing it.

My next purchases will be Bubble Bobble, Zelda and the next Castlevania.

do you find it a little small in your hands? The DS, that is... using the direction control on the left and the top edge control is a little awkward IMO

I have BIG hands, my fiancee calls me a giant

But I don't have any real issues, just depending on the game really.

I even changed the button layout on New Super Mario Bros to make it a little more comfortable for me for extended plays.

Trauma Center (very hard though)
New Super Mario Brothers
Advance Wars DS (my personal fav, love turn based games)
Animal Crossing (if you like The Sims types of games)

Sometime . . . for me the shoulder buttons are sometimes a little hard to use. Just have to stop and stretch the fingers every now and them.

You'd better be hitting perth to have a few beers with me mate 😉

I'd love to, but I'm only going for three weeks and hitting the east coast only... aus is freaking huge! Has to cancel the trip to uluru as it was going to take way too long and cost a packet. I'm hoping to move to aus in a year's time though, so defo then 😉

thats the reason i didn't buy one - it felt too small in my hands

Mario Kart DS is a very short game if you don't have somebody else to play against. New Super Mario Bros will take up a lot of time, as well as Metroid. If you like RPG, get Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Very fun and enjoyable. I had a blast playing and beating it. Animal Crossing's not my style, it's very pointless to say the least. I should've waited for Harvest Moon.

Trauma Center
Phoenix Wright (I can't believe how good this game is) good luck finding it though
Kirby's is also very very awesome

NSMB - Nothing new here, but it's classic platforming at its best. Refined controls and pretty sweet level design.
Phoenix Wright - It's a lawyer game! Really cool, really fun and really rare. You'll only get one playthrough from it but it's so rad it's worth it.
Advance Wars - Stylus controlled strategy game. Pretty fun, lots of variety in the units and it's really long. Extra missions unlockable if you plug in the AW GBA games.
Kirby Canvas Curse - Maybe not your bag, but it's definitely a gamer's game.

There are technically firmware changes you can make but you're going to have to get into the homebrew there. What kind of games do you normally like/play?

Everything listed above.

Also, I just got the new Mario Hoops 3-on-3 that came out Monday. It's very fun! Pretty easy so far, but fun. Haven't tried multiplayer, but I can tell that will be a blast.
